Los Angeles, October 14, 2024 – The 2024 Black Love Summit, which took place this past weekend from Friday, Oct. 11 to Sunday, Oct.13, ended with a transformative three-day celebration of Black love, relationships, family, and personal growth.
On a radiant Saturday morning, October 19th, at 10 AM, Washington, D.C., embraced a moment of joyful celebration, gathering to pay homage to one of its most cherished sports icons. Mayor Muriel Bowser, with a beaming smile, presented the illustrious Darrell Green—an NFL Hall of Fame legend—with the esteemed Key to the City. This ceremonial honor, held at the lush Franklin Park, located at 1332 I St NW, was a heartfelt acknowledgment of Green’s extraordinary contributions to the world of football and his community.
Darrell Green, a former cornerback, soared through the annals of NFL history as one of its fastest and most talented players. Born on February 15, 1960, in Houston, Texas, he dedicated an awe-inspiring 20 years to the Washington Redskins (now the Washington Commanders), gracing the field with unmatched speed and tenacity from 1983 to 2002. His agility earned him the affectionate moniker “Ageless Wonder,” a fitting tribute to his ability to maintain peak performance well into his 40s.
Selected in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft as the 28th overall pick, Green’s college career at Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M-Kingsville) was nothing short of spectacular, where he shone as an All-American in track and field. His electrifying 4.29-second 40-yard dash propelled him into the NFL spotlight, showcasing his skills as both a shutdown cornerback and a dynamic kick returner.
Throughout his legendary career, Green carved his name into the fabric of football with seven Pro Bowl selections and four First-Team All-Pro honors. He was a vital force behind the Redskins’ triumphs in two epic Super Bowls (XXII and XXVI), earning a reputation for locking down the league’s top wide receivers. His extraordinary longevity—playing elite football into his early 40s—set him apart in a league where longevity is a rare gem.
Yet, beyond the statistics and accolades, it was Green’s character and work ethic that truly made him a beacon of inspiration. Crowned the NFL Man of the Year in 1996, his commitment to uplifting others was evident through the Darrell Green Youth Life Foundation, which empowers at-risk youth through education and leadership programs.
Following his retirement after the 2002 season, Green walked away with an NFL-record 295 games played as a defensive back, along with 54 interceptions and six touchdowns to his name. His induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008 cemented his legacy as one of the greatest defensive players in the sport’s history

As he received this esteemed honor that weekend, anticipation swirled in the air, leading up to the retirement of his iconic jersey number (#28) at the Commanders’ game on Sunday, October 20th. Birthday parties usually focus on commemorating the individual’s special day, those moments fill our spaces with love, laughter, and memories. Typically, during this time the individual celebrating their birthday is surrounded by friends and relatives who make them feel special. O-Slice, however, does things a little differently. Recognized for her unique rap flow, O-Slice is also known for her generosity and sense of community. With these attributes, O-Slice challenges the conventional birthday festivities. Every birthday celebration is a chance for her to reciprocate the love and support that she receives from her entourage.
This year, O-Slice celebrated her 30th birthday in high vibration and symphony. Through her organization, HYERLearnin, O-Slice hosted a special edition of “The Inner Circle,” a musical series that she started in 2016. The HYERLearnin initiative began as a small project to provide space for up-and-coming independent musicians in the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia area. Over the years, it has grown into a vital part of the DMV music scene. With eight sold-out shows and even a summer music festival under their belt, the organization has established itself as a movement rather than just a platform.
O-Slice’s goal for the HYERLearnin was to curate a concert experience that was more impactful than ordinary. Along with her talented friends, she created an environment where artists can work together, connect, and support one another.
While the crowd celebrated O-Slice’s birthday, some of the most promising up-and-coming artists in the DMV were highlighted. The list included the following artists: Adwoa, Al Hostile, Matt McGhee, Anguesomo, Foots X Coles, and Neptune XXI. Each musician showcased their individual and distinctive sound throughout their performances. The room was filled with the liveliest to the most free-flowing energy. The Inner Circle 9 was like a family get-together. In that space, you’re guaranteed to discover a new favorite performer.
What makes The Inner Circle—and O-Slice birthday parties—so memorable is O-Slice’s ability to combine communal inspiration with personal celebration. We are looking forward to enjoying music from O-Slice and witnessing the expansion of the HYERLearnin!
