“Deli Boys” Breaks Barriers for South Asian Actors in the Crime-Drama Genre

The new Hulu series redefines legacy, responsibility and purpose in the backdrop of an illegal drug trade.

Deli Boys stars Asif Ali and Saagar Shaikh, who are no strangers to stand-up comedy and the small screen. In their new Hulu series, they take on the roles of Mir and Raj Dar, a pair of spoiled Pakistani-American brothers thrown into chaos after the loss of their father.

Set in Philadelphia—a city known for its vibrant Pakistani and Muslim communities—the series incorporates references to local towns, attractions, and schools that will resonate with viewers familiar with the area.

Between the two brothers, Mir (Ali) works hard to emulate their father’s success—Baba, as he is lovingly called—while Raj (Shaikh) typically sits back, contributing little. However, the plot of Deli Boys quickly shifts into gear when the Dar brothers discover their father’s involvement in a massive drug trade operating through his convenience store.

After Baba’s death, the business resumes with the help of Lucky (Poorna Jagannathan) and Ahmed (Brian George), who clash over who should take control. Outside of the drug cartel bubble is Raj’s girlfriend, Prairie (Alfie Fuller), whose free-spirited, spiritual nature offsets the series’ tension and drama.

Deli Boys was created by Abdullah Saeed alongside Jenni Konner and Michelle Nader. The Knockturnal spoke in-depth with the cast and creators about the show’s comedic and heartfelt storylines.

All episodes of Deli Boys will stream exclusively on Hulu starting March 6
