Ben Affleck and Ana De Armas star in an original, but ultimately average psychosexual thriller.
Based on the Patricia Highsmith novel of the same name, director Adrian Lyne does what he does best in creating a mystery surrounding failed relationships. In this specific one, millionaire Vic Van Allen (Affleck), has to deal with his promiscuous wife, and more specifically her younger lovers. The only reason he lets her have these affairs is to avoid a divorce and preserve his family.
While I can see where the film was trying to go, it certainly doesn’t come all together in the end. In complete honesty, it felt like a washed up remake of Gone Girl. While it doesn’t necessarily follow the same plot, it still pops up in the back of your head the entire time while watching it. As the movie unfolded, all I was really hoping for was an incredible twist, but it never really came. The movie plays out exactly how you’d expect until maybe the last 20 seconds.
If you’re into psychosexual thrillers and want to see one that you’ve never really seen before, this is definitely something you. However, I feel that regular movie goers, especially fans of David Fincher, should skip over this unless they want to watch a what feels like a copy of a copy of one of his movies.
