An intimate space that features incredibly delicious food

Opening a new restaurant in the West Village is always a massive undertaking.

The neighborhood is already packed with some of the most iconic spots and talented chefs in the city, so standing out requires something genuinely special. But after heading down to Jones Street last week to celebrate the grand opening of Cynthia, it’s clear this place has exactly what it takes. It already feels like one of the most exciting additions to the downtown dining scene this season.

The restaurant is a partnership between restaurateur Claire DuBois and Chef Sherry Cardoso, a fast-rising star you might recognize from the current season of Bravo’s Top Chef. DuBois named the spot after her aunt, Cynthia Peck, the woman who taught her family that hospitality is fundamentally an act of love. Walking into the 28-seat space, you feel that philosophy immediately. It completely captures that rare balance of intimacy, warmth, and high-level cooking.  The menu is focused on seasonal, quality ingredients that emphasizes each ingredient’s natural flavors and essence.

To celebrate the launch, the team hosted an opening reception that felt less like a stiff industry event and more like a lively dinner party. The room was buzzing, and because of the open kitchen layout, guests could watch Chef Cardoso and her team work up close, which added a great, high-energy layer to the night.  One of the absolute standouts of the night was a seared scallop dish from this season’s tasting menu. Cooked perfectly and topped with a dollop of Osetra caviar, it delivered a single, decadent bite of sweet and savory flavors that had guests tracking down the platter for seconds.  To pair with the bites, the bar featured two of Cynthia’s signature cocktails: a Mezcal Negroni and a Currant Cosmo. The Mezcal Negroni was an immediate favorite, balancing the earthy smoke of the mezcal with the deep, bitter-sweet notes of Cap Corse Rouge. It was the exact kind of bright, palate-awakening drink that makes you want to order another round.

Throughout the evening, the kitchen sent out an assortment of passed plates, offering a sneak peek of the nightly seasonal, sustainable tasting menu. Each bite that made its way around the room proved exactly why Chef Cardoso is getting so much national attention, delivering refined, thoughtful flavors that hit the perfect note.

As the West Village heads into the summer, the energy on these streets is already unmatched, and Cynthia is arriving at the perfect time. Walking out of that cozy dining room, it was obvious that this little 28-seat gem is going to be one of the toughest reservations to score in the neighborhood. Put this one at the top of your list before the rest of the city catches on.
