This wonderful film from Grammy winner Pharrell Williams and Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker offers a fresh and funny perspective on the coming of age genre. Dope was nominated for the prized Grand Jury Prize at Sundance this year. Critics have said it is “Irresistible, freewheeling fun!” and “Nothing short of intoxicating”. Featuring an old school soundtrack as well as four new original songs from Pharrell Williams, there’s something for everyone to enjoy on this loaded DVD. Some of the great extra features include a discussion among the cast and crew surrounding the film’s central characters and themes of being unique. Pharrell, A$AP Rocky, director Rick Fumuyiwa and others delve into the important role old school hip hop played in the film in another DVD bonus feature.
The film follows Malcolm, played by Shameik Moore, who is a straight-A high school senior with a passion for old school rap. He finds himself entangled in the middle of an adventure involving sketchy drug dealers, colorful weirdos, and a backpack that can make or break his chance of getting into Harvard. He film also features several other notable names, such as A$AP Rocket, Blake Anderson from “Workaholics”, Zoë Kravitz from Divergent, Tony Revolori from The Grand Budapest Hotel, rapper Tygam and supermodel Chanel Iman.
