A scrawled note declares the inspiration for Tadashi Shoji’s Autumn/Winter 2017 collection’s makeup look as “A ’60s-esque women’s liberation.”
Imagining the ’60s with its Bardot hair and lashings of mascara, Pep Gay, the makeup artist for Shoji’s show, emphasizes the eyes exclusively using MAC products. The face is fresh and pink, virtually untouched save for a sweeping of blush that creates a peachy glow. Lips are painted with MAC’s clear Lipglass. It’s all relatively simple until Gay blends innovation with a nod to the past. The eyes are doll-like with fluttering lashes that are lined with 3D glitter. Except the glitter eyeliner underneath the lower lash line, adding funk to its allGay’s look recalls Twiggy in her state of perpetual surprise with a slight twist.
Paired with Shoji’s Autumn/Winter 2017 collection, however, the look of the ingenue falls out of sync with the sophistication of the clothes. Lace, moments of sheerness that capture a glimpse of skin, velvet and tea-length dresses speak of refinement and a classic glamour that Gay’s look glosses over. The heaviness of the clothes, specifically the floral brocade Hendrix suit and the rich gold embroidery of the black cape with a bow, are further weighed down by Gay’s thick bottom lashes. Despite it all, the makeup look finds moments of perfection: see it with the silver velvet jumpsuit with the neckline that plunges.
