After a successful festival run, an official screening of ‘The Last First: Winter K2’ was held at the IFC Center in New York City on Thursday, October 1, the evening before its wide streaming release on Apple TV. The screening was followed by a Q&A with director Amir Bar-Lev.
During the screening, echos of gasps could be heard throughout the audience, reflecting the emotional weight of the film’s events. In the end, the ambiguity of the film may leave some audience members wanting more. Naturally, viewers become attached to particular individuals and their stories, wanting to dive deeper into their experiences, whether that be the Nepalese team pursuing the historic first winter ascent, or the paying clients who were part of the commercial expedition organized by Seven Summit Treks, climbers with limited mountaineering experience documenting their pursuits for social media.

However, this is an ensemble-led film, with multiple, interconnected stories, each contributing to the film’s larger arc. The Last First: Winter K2 goes beyond the dangerous trek these climbers endure as they attempt to reach the summit of K2 and the tragedy that ultimately unfolds for many involved. It also weaves together a larger message through themes of race, survival, ambition, family, man versus man, and man versus nature.

During the Q&A, Bar-Lev shared insights into his filmmaking process, describing the project as the “most difficult yet enjoyable film” he has made. He discussed the challenges and difficult decisions he and his team faced in the editing room, choices that ultimately shaped how the story was told. The ensemble-led narrative and its ambiguity are central to how Bar-Lev found his voice as a director. Just as climbers make defining choices moment by moment on their ascent of K2, Bar-Lev and his team made their own choices throughout the editing process in the making of this film.
As reflected in the title itself, the heart of the film lies in everything that happens before, during, and after the historic endeavor,. The achievement of the first winter ascent of K2 was also, in the same breath, the last major attempt. To witness the stories unfolding in between, The Last First: Winter K2 is now available to stream on Apple TV.
