Academy of Art University presented their Spring 2017 collections this week at New York Fashion Week. Thirteen talented students from the private university are selected each season to participate in the school’s biannual show. Designers are selected in regard to overall creativity in “Textiles, three dimensional design, tailoring, and construction techniques”.
Designers include; Nina Nguyen Hui whos collection was inspired by sea corals and incorporated tambour beading, embroidery, and lazer cutting, Melissa Kheng who was inspired by the utilitarian elements of Singaporean fishermen, Natalya Sheveleva Robinson who was inspired by Art Deco architecture as well as juxtaposition in warm and cool colors, Yi Ru Chen who used 1920’s era shapes to compliment her minimalist aesthetic to create relaxed looks, Jing Qian who used eco-friendly pigments to hand paint her textiles with abstract designs, Lindsey Trueman who used grain sacks to honor her heritage of Native American roots, Ben Ellis who used repurposed denim and jersey to perpetuate his sustainable practices, Anita Szu-Yi Chen who manipulated knit fabrications into angular shapes typically seen in woven construction, Dora Li who was inspired by 1930’s child workers who donned adult garments, Carly Dean who utilized burnout prints to accentuate her garments, and finally GeuMi Lee who used technical fabrics styled with boxing shoes to create a futuristic, new age look.
