The stars were out in full force last night at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills for the 2025 ABFF Honors, an evening dedicated to celebrating Black excellence in film and television.

Hosted by the hilarious and charismatic Zainab Johnson, the American Black Film Festival’s annual awards season gala paid tribute to the artists who have not only excelled in their craft but have also championed diversity and inclusion in Hollywood.

Founded in 2016, ABFF Honors has become a beacon of recognition for Black talent in the entertainment industry. This year’s event did not disappoint, delivering powerful speeches, emotional moments, and unforgettable celebrations of achievement.  The event was a gathering of Black Hollywood’s finest, with Anthony Mackie, Teyana Taylor, Lance Gross, Larenz Tate, Loretta Devine, Tika Sumpter, Yvonne Orji, and more gracing the red carpet in stunning fashion. The atmosphere was electric as industry heavyweights mingled, celebrated, and supported each other’s successes.

The evening was a testament to the impact of Black voices in Hollywood, with a lineup of honorees whose work has inspired audiences worldwide. Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor was honored with the Excellence in the Arts Award for her powerful performances and dedication to telling authentic stories. In a heartfelt moment, Ellis-Taylor reflected on her journey  of complex characters and shared which roles she was most proud of, “I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Mattie Moss Clark in The Clark Sisters, but also, I’m here because of this man right here,” she said, gesturing to director RaMell Ross. Hattie in Nickel Boys—I feel incredibly proud of that role.”

Giancarlo Esposito, known for his commanding presence on screen, also received the Excellence in the Arts Award, recognizing his dynamic career and versatility as an actor. Keke Palmer, the multi-talented actress, singer, and producer, was celebrated with the Renaissance Award, a fitting tribute to her evolution as a powerhouse in the industry. The legendary Marla Gibbs was presented with the Hollywood Legacy Award, honoring her trailblazing career that has paved the way for generations of Black performers. The emotional standing ovation she received was a testament to her enduring impact and beloved legacy.  New talent was also recognized as Aaron Pierre was awarded the Rising Star Award. His acceptance speech reflected his gratitude and excitement for the future, signaling the arrival of a new force in film and television.

From Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor’s poignant words to Marla Gibbs’ emotional tribute, ABFF Honors 2025 was a night of laughter, reflection, and inspiration. It was a celebration of those who have paved the way and those who are just getting started, ensuring that Black stories continue to shape the future of entertainment.  ABFF Honors isn’t just about recognizing talent; it’s about celebrating culture, community, and progress. The ceremony continues to amplify Black voices in entertainment, reinforcing the importance of diversity and inclusion in Hollywood. The night was a reminder of the power of storytelling and the importance of representation on and off the screen.  As the night ended with applause and admiration, it was clear that ABFF Honors is more than just an awards show—it’s a movement, a celebration, and a reminder that Black excellence is here to stay.
