Concert Review: Sofar Sounds Presents Fiona Grey

This past month Sofar Sounds NYC treated me to one of the most intimate concert experiences of my life.

I was invited to sit in on one of their concerts in the Lower East Side. Known for curating secret gigs in unique spaces where surprise artists and guests can come and share the gift of music, Sofar is now working internationally to bring people together to enjoy music.

The event I attended was set on a rooftop in the LES. The night started off with greetings from the Sofar team members and, rightfully so, a handful of rules and expectations to ensure that everyone had a great time at the show. Fiona Grey came onto the stage and performed with her guitarist by her side. Despite the fact it began to rain a few minutes into her set, Fiona wasn’t phased and finished her song in a graceful manner.

Although we were technically rained out, it wasn’t over. Everyone was escorted into the building, where an office waiting room was transformed into space where everyone could sit comfortably and continue to enjoy the show. Fiona Grey came back and finished her performance with a high amount of energy. She also had a great connection with her guitarist. The crowd was clearly into it. They clapped along and responded to all of the call and response moments in Fiona’s performance.

Fernandito Ferrer was next. He shared his story about his journey from Puerto Rico and gave the crowd an unforgettable performance. While playing his guitar he recorded and layered loops on the fly. Fernandito ran through a gamut of  Puerto Rican instruments and shared some wild improvisational vocalizing. As a Spanish speaker, I felt especially connected to the music. After Fernandito came Gracie and Rachel.  Using an electrical violin and keyboard, the duo took us on a wild orchestral pop ride.  They played three original songs and ended with their own rendition of Kreayshawn’s “Gucci Gucci”.

The Sofar experience left me feeling thankful that I could witness such an intimate concert. I got to avoid the long lines, suffocating crowds, and overpriced drinks; all while being front and center for a host of amazing acts.

If you’re interested in checking out Sofar, use code KNOCTURNAL-56035 to skip the line and get priority access to purchase tickets to the show of your choice.
