Concert Review: Shelter Live Tour At MSG

The tour many had been waiting for finally touched NYC’s ground this past Thursday and Friday. Porter Robinson and Madeon’s Shelter Live Tour was the perfect combination of art, music, and talent and will be an experience attendees will not forget.

Porter Robinson and Madeon have become very distinguished names in the EDM world. Although 25 and 22 respectively, their expertise and artistry of music go beyond their years. These talents have managed to, in a world where standing out can be very difficult, create not only unique sounds but very good ones as well.

It was not Madeon’s first time performing at MSG. He opened for Zedd’s tour a little over a year ago. This was my third time seeing him and he never ceases to amaze me. The humbleness and passion which he performs with are qualities I have not seen in many, and the energy he projects while playing his incredibly well-produced songs take his concerts to a whole new level.

It was also my second time seeing Porter Robinson. I had been waiting for a while to see his set. Many EDM goers have said that his Worlds tour was one of the best concerts they have ever attended in their lives. This is a big statement and I had to experience it for myself. This past summer, Porter was invited to perform at Ezoo and boy did he live up to every single expectation I had.

When their Shelter Tour was announced, I knew this was going to be something very special and something that might only take place once. All of my friends, also fans of these incredible DJs, could not stop talking about this. The anticipation of the events really skyrocketed through the roof, which made everything even better.

I first want to give a shout out to one of the opening acts, Danger, who I had never heard of before, but is on top of my list of people I want to see again. His music is a little distinct from Porter and Madeon’s but he managed to make me fall in love with his music and performance. His set ended at 10 and 15 minutes after it was time for Porter and Madeon to come on.

As the stage was being prepped for their entrance, the screams of the audience became louder and louder. One could feel the excitement of the attendees filling up the whole venue. The stage lights flashed along with an explosion of sound and fans went crazy.

Madeon took the left side of the stage, Porter took the right. Both of their creative genius were mixed onto everything in terms of music and production. They even combined both of their logos. This has been one of the best collaborations I have seen.

These two were meant to collaborate at some point or another. Not only did their sounds mix beautifully but they fed off each other’s energy so well. The love and passion of both created an overwhelming euphoria that each member of the audience got to live through in their hour and 15 minute concert.

The visual also combined both of the artists’ marks. Sometimes they would show graphics that Madeon uses in his set, except this time around they would be colored with Porter’s Worlds colors (purple, pastel pink).

Porter is hugely influenced by the Japanese culture so of course anime is featured in all of his performances. A good majority of Porter’s music videos are anime based, including the video of “Shelter,” which has a beautiful story line.

The duo opened up their concert with their collab song which everyone sang along to. The rest of the concert consisted of a mix of their most famous songs. Some of the Porter songs that were played were “Sea of Voices,” “Divinity,” “Language,” and of course when “Sad Machine” came on, the crowd completely lost it. Some of Madeon’s songs that were played were “You’re On,” “Pay No Mind,” “The City,” to which fans all knew the lyrics.

We loved how the individual styles blended together. Another amazing component of their performances is that we got to enjoy their very own vocals. Madeon and Porter both like to create their own music, lyrics, and vocals (talk about talent). After giving a tribute to the legendary Daft Punk, they brought it down a notch to create a private an intimate moment with the attendees. They thanked everyone for the 6th time, they were truly grateful to have the opportunity to perform in MSG for two consecutive nights. Madeon even named NYC as his favorite city! Porter and Madeon descended their sets and stopped in the middle front of the stage. Porter began to play the keyboard as Madeon sang to “Shelter.” It was a beautiful and bittersweet moment, since we all did not want the concert to come to an end but also were euphoric for what we were experiencing. Confetti fell from the ceiling and the crowd went nuts. They raised the energy again and gave everyone a phenomenal finale, with two encore songs.

If you still have the opportunity to see this tour, please do so! It was an incredible experience, especially if you are so fond of these two incredibly talented producers, DJs and just pure artists.
