TFF 2016: Justin Timberlake Talks Scoring ‘The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea’

“The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea” world premiered at Tribeca Film Festival 2016.

Stars Jason Sudeikis, Maisie Williams, Jessica Biel were in attendance. Biel also served as producer on the film. Her husband Justin Timberlake made his scoring debut. The stars participated in a panel after the screening. Read what Justin had to say about his creative process:

I’ve known Michelle and Bill and obviously Jess and Jason for a long time, so I’ve known about the movie and I think one day Bill and I were talking and he says, “Man, if we ever get this movie made, you have to score it,” and I was like, “Sure.” (Laughter)

–

Then they got it made, so … No, I’ve always wanted to explore what it would be like to score a film. I was one of those child freaks that would watch a movie and probably listen to the score more than watch the movie … You know, really quickly, I guess the process in diving in was, you know, you had these three characters. Two that are Maisie and Jason’s characters and Jess’s character, Penny, and sort of completing this triangle. I guess I really looked at those three characters. Honestly, I think it went back to Peter and the Wolf, in that every time a character was introduced they had their own melody. They had their own instrument. They were specific to them.

–

That’s where I started. As their relationship grows, how do those melodies and those specific instruments that sort of perform those melodies … How did they clash? In the same way that Jason says, “Right on the other side of tragedy there’s comedy,” and this movie really speaks to that idea. It was fun for me to mix in those moments because … I could feel it in the room. We would go to something. I would hear people sniffling and then someone would giggle.

–

I think mostly … I’m rambling. Mostly stay out of the way, because I got to watch this movie a thousand times, and like Jason said, I cried in  … Probably the exact same four places, and so it was a real treat for me. The lyrics and the performances are so good. The writing feels great. Everyone’s performances are so good and feel so real to me that honestly I just tried to stay out of the way.

After the screening, the cast headed to an official after-party sponsored by Sauza901 at 1 OAK.
