A musical based on 20th Century Fox’s animated film about the only surviving member of the Romanov royal family is set to debut on Broadway in 2017.
The musical was picked up by production company Stage Entertainment USA, which was responsible for the stage productions of Rocky, Big Fish, and Sister Act. The director, who will also be directing the show’s run on Hartford Stage in Connecticut, is Darko Tresjnak. He won a Tony award in 2014 for directing A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder on Broadway.
The score is being composed by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, who wrote the songs for the animated movie. Flaherty and Ahrens‘ songs from the film were nominated for both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe back in 1998.
The book is being written by Terrence McNally. In the past, McNally has written Ragtime, Lips Together Teeth Apart, and The Full Monty for the Broadway stage.
The show is sure to attract show-goers, particularly those who view the Anastasia animated film as a classic. The musical will be running on Hartford Stage from May 12 to June 16 and is currently in rehearsals.
