Dexter has been America’s favorite serial killer for a long time. A really long time.
The Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 bloody red carpet offered some insight into the show’s staying power. The cast and crew gave their thoughts on why audiences first fell in love with a prolific murderer and then continued to love him for twenty years.

“The secret is, I think that if it were just like a horror show it would be another horror show. If it were just trying to come up with scary bad guys that would be scary that would be fun. Whatever. But it’s the fact that every one of the killers we come up with are dealing with things Dexter is going through each season,” said Scott Reynolds, who writes for the show. Reynolds gives examples of some of those things Dexter is dealing with: “Dexter is thinking, ‘Can I have a family? Can I experience love?’”

Jack Alcott, who plays Dexter’s son Harrison, puts Dexter high up there on the greatest shows of all time list. “Dexter is up there because it’s one of our first examples of antiheroes. You have Dexter and you have The Sopranos. It hadn’t been done before,” he said.

Bokeem Woodbine, who plays a police captain in the new season, is all in for having love for the bad guy. “Criminals are more fun to play,” he said, drawing from experience playing both sides of the law. “Playing the bad guy is definitely a better time.”
After the carpet interviews, guests flocked into the reception, which was replete morbid decorations and a small temporary exhibit on the show’s history, featuring artifacts from set.
