Film Review: ‘Breaking Through’

Executive producer John Legend and writer-director John Swetnam have teamed up with DanceOn (YouTube network co-founded by Madonna) to bring us this coming-of-age, internet generation dance flick.

The movie begins with a group of friends (Sophia Aguiar, Jordan Rodrigues, Robert Roldan, Marissa Heart, Taeko McCarroll) on a quest to find the perfect spot for their next choreography video.

Breaking Through follows Casey Wright, played by Sophia Aguiar who is a star in her own right, but due to the vast majority of dance videos online she is subjected to believe that she doesn’t have what it takes to make it. She now has to decide whether or not to follow her dreams or to fade into the back like the rest before her. When it seems all is lost Casey gets a visit from a manager named Quinn, played by Jay Ellis who is willing to sign her dance crew to his agency. JJ, played by Jordan Rodrigues doesn’t like the vibe that Quinn is relaying to the group and believes that he is flirting with Casey (best friend/love interest). Things don’t move as fast as Casey would like it to so she takes up Quinns’ offer to go solo. I don’t want to give away anymore spoilers! This film has everything from comedy to drama, and best of all dancing. If you want to find out what happens to Casey and her crew you need to watch this film.

With the executive-producer being John Legend, there is also a star studded cast from the dance and music world. The cast includes Sophia Aguiar, Jordan Rodrigues, Jay Ellis, Robert Roldan, Marissa Heart, Taeko McCarroll, Les Twins, Poreotics, Dominic Sandoval, Lindsey Stirling, Ian Eastwood, Anitta, McCarrie McCausland, and Shaun Brown.

Breaking Through will be released on October 9,2015.
