Approaching the Gene Frankel Theatre, one notices Bruce Williams’ installation, *Dreams of Hyperion*, with its golden figures moving up and down the front of the building. It complements the production of *Lucky Man – A Warrior’s Journey* perfectly. Just as the dreams of the sun god go up and down, so does the life of Thomas G. Waites.
*Lucky Man – A Warrior’s Journey* is Thomas G. Waites’ monologue with his band, Heartbreak Waites. Waites has written the story of his life with searing clarity. Waites starts with his expulsion from Juilliard’s Drama Division. He speeds forward two years when, at 23, Waites reaches the peak of any actor’s dream. He hit it big with starring roles in *On the Yard*, *The Warriors*, *…And Justice for All*, and *The Thing*. He was working with film icons such as Al Pacino and Kurt Russell. Like the golden figures climbing up the building, Waites has achieved his golden, glorious dreams.
In the same manner as the golden figures descended, Waites also fell. Alcohol destroyed his career and family life. However, just as the sun god is life-giving, Waites recovers his life through AA.
This unfiltered memoir is an emotional roller coaster. Waites pulls you down as he tells of his fall. You soar with him as he achieves redemption. The tale of his life is enhanced by the music from his band, Heartbreak Waites. Tony Daniels is the Musical Director and plays lead guitar. Keyboard, percussion, and vocals are supplied by Cedric Allen Hills. Annie McGovern’s vocals add to the power of the band. The band’s work is seamlessly incorporated into the production.
