The film 1992 shows firsthand the LA uprising after the Rodney King verdict, portraying the racial tension that arises, directed by Ariel Vromen, written by Sascha Penn and Ariel Vromen, and executive produced by Snoop Dogg through Lionsgate and Death Row Pictures.

The main plot of the film centers around two parallel stories of father and son relationships, as we follow Tyrese Gibson’s character Mercer who wants to set an example for his son, played by Christopher A’mmanuel. On the other end, Ray Liotta in his last film, plays Lowell, a father who has lost hope in both of his sons, played by Scott Eastwood and Dylan Arnold.

1992 also brings up the conflicting issues amidst such a turbulent time, as the characters try to navigate their relationship as a hardworking father who wants to protect his son and give him hope, while Mercer looks for his son in the middle of the LA crowd during the uprising.

“For me, I wasn’t in Los Angeles in 1992, I just moved in 2000, but for me, it was a big deal,” director Ariel Vromen said. “The film you can see, it has two worlds in it, it’s a very diverse cast for a South Central movie.”

It’s a film about Compton, as Tyrese put it, told from a human perspective that completely captivates you and shocks you at the same time for its rawness.

“I would love to go on and on about how special this movie is, the idea that this is a movie that was never supposed to be made, because it was very challenging to get this movie made,” Tyrese said.

The LA premiere happened at Regal Cinemas in Downtown LA on August 27, and many notables were in attendance, including Vin Diesel as a friend of the cast, who posed with Tyrese on the red carpet honoring Ray Liotta’s legacy.

The film was released on Labor Day weekend and is out in theaters now.
