Billy Corben is the visionary filmmaker behind Netflix’s six-part documentary series ‘Cocaine Cowboys: Kings of Miami.’

The series tells the story of the rise and fall of Salvador “Sal” Magluta and Augusto “Willy” Falcon, two of the biggest cocaine traffickers in Miami during the ‘80s. The duo built a $2 billion drug empire, were accused of smuggling over 75 tons of cocaine into the United States, and ultimately became two of Miami’s biggest celebrities.

Each episode is comprised of candid interviews with friends and family of Willy and Sal, government officials, jurors, journalists, and more, creating a compelling documentary series.

All six parts of the series are complete with a lively and engaging aesthetic. “First and foremost we have to serve the story,” Corben said. “And if you’re telling a tale about the rise and fall of highflying cocaine traffickers — the biggest traffickers of all time according to the U.S. Government in Miami — you have to adopt an aesthetic that leans itself to the piece.”

Corben discusses more about the aesthetic of the documentary, the show’s theme song that is performed by Pitbull, conducting interviews, production challenges, what he is most proud of about the series, and more.

Cocaine Cowboys: Kings of Miami is available only on Netflix.
