The creator of “Living Single” and Netflixβs “Dear White People,” Yvette Lee Bowser has joined forces with Leigh Davenport, creator of BETβs “Boomerang” and “Wendy Williams: The Hot Topic” to showcase four Black women living their best lives in Starzβs “Run the World.”
Bresha Webb, Corbin Reid, Andrea Bordeaux and Amber Stevens West star in the new comedy series set in Harlem as they strive for greatness and world domination. The fierce and hilarious, thirty something year old best friends take on life as they navigate through the highs and lows of the workplace and of their intimate relationships. Whether they are on the up and up or feeling low down, they remain unapologetic knowing that their sisterhood will always be there for support.
On Thursday, May 13 the entire cast and crew including Stephen Bishop, Tosin Morohunfola, Nick Sagar and Jay Walker attended the Los Angeles premiere party and screening for Run the World. The intimate, Covid friendly event took place at one of Hollywoodβs most celebrated buildings, NeueHouse. After a brief purple carpet roll out, guests were ushered to their seats outdoors on the NeueHouse rooftop with views of Los Angeles surrounding them. Attendees were given the option to try a variety of specialty cocktails inspired by each of the main characters such as βThe Ellaβ or your choice of Black Girl Magic Wines. Of course, these specialty drinks were paired with a full course meal starting with your choice of salt baked beets or a salad of Tuscan kale, a roasted chicken bowl or half roasted cauliflower bowl for the entrΓ©e and organic berry crumble or Valrhona dark chocolate mousse for dessert. For a very special surprise, attendees were serenaded by the talented artist Ledisi who performed a few original songs and a hypnotic cover of Cyndi Lauper’s Time After Time. Guests then dined as they watched the first two episodes of the series. You could hear gasps, laughs, cheers and clapping throughout both the episodes. After a successful screening the energy was at an all-time high as the cast got up to dance and enjoy their reunion.

After the unbelievably tough year we have all had, Run the World is almost a palette cleanser, getting us ready for the outside and fun that we have been longing for. Many are already comparing the show to hit shows Sex and the City and Girlfriends which is no concern to show creator Davenport as she states, βI think itβs really fun and really cool. Every generation deserves their show that depicts their relationship and what it feels like to be a modern, successful woman striving for the best.β It is certainly a breath of fresh air to see Black women depicted in such a high esteem. Black women are successful, they have healthy relationships, they go through your everyday struggles like everyone else and it is nice to see the authenticity. However, while the focus is on Black women, all women can see themselves in these characters and possibly learn something from them. βOne thing I love about Renee [Bresha Webb] and that Iβm doing is therapy. Finding ways to get that fixed and try to approach it and have people tell you the truth,β Webb shares.
With each character and story plot introduced, viewers are in for a wild and possibly relatable ride. Catch up with the sophisticated women of Harlem as Run the World premieres May 16 on Starz.
