Claire Foy Promotes ‘The Girl In The Spider’s Web’ The Morning After Her Emmy Win

Claire Foy was “up and at at ‘em” on Tuesday as she promoted the latest movie in the Dragon Tattoo story at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, California.

The Knockturnal got the chance to screen 20 minutes of the The Girl In The Spider’s Web. The preview paints a picture of Lisbeth Salander as a feminist hero-like protagonist.

Unlike the previous Dragon Tattoo films of the book series where Salander is simply a piece in the puzzle, Foy’s character takes the spotlight in The Girl In The Spider’s Web. Taking place in Stockholm, Sweden,  the snippet highlights the computer hacker as a vigilante when she saves a woman from her abusive husband and transfers all of his funds into her account.

“She’s like a feminist Batman. That’s who she is,” said Director Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe) during the Q&A. “It does have that element of a superhero, I guess, but the adventure itself is quite different.”

Different indeed.

“She’s not loveable, she’s not polite, she’s not pretty. She’s not everything that you think a female protagonist is supposed to be. She’s hard. She makes really terrible, terrible decisions and you don’t know if you can get behind them. I think that’s the interesting thing about it,” said Foy as she describes her character.

At one point the British star was asked about what it was like playing a queer character in a predominantly male dominated and heterosexual society.

“The thing I love about her so much is her unwillingness to go identify in any particular way. She rejects any labeling, anything society wants to put on her, anything that anyone else wants to put on her. She lives entirely as herself, and therefore she will seek pleasure where she seeks pleasure – whether that’s with a man, or a woman, or on her own.”

The rest of the Q&A consisted of questions about the intensity of the character, the #MeToo movement and role with the film, and nonstop congratulatory remarks over her win the previous night.

The 34-year-old actress received an Emmy award for Outstanding Actress in a Drama series.

“The last 24 hours have been very, very, strange, and amazing, and really, really lovely,” the actress explained during the Q&A. Foy played the role of a Young Queen Elizabeth in Netflix’s hit show The Crown.
