Humans of Fashion Gala Hits a Nerve

In the wake of the #metoo movement, it seems Hollywood powerhouses, and fashion moguls are starting to take note.

Many of whom have gone into hiding in the midst of sexual allegations crumbling the industry. Versace model Kristina Romanova and lawyer Antoniette Costa joined forces to start the nonprofit organization Humans of fashion which is shining a spotlight on any sexual misconduct in the business.

The two women have used the momentum from New York Fashion Week as a platform to change the current dynamic. Now more than ever, woman are feeling empowered to stand up and be heard. The foundation protects and boosts the less powerful players in the fashion world including models, stylists, makeup artists, and photographers. The aim is to connect these people, who have suffered sexual abuse and mistreatment at the hands of their more influential counterparts to consolers, lawyers, doctors and support networks.

Powerful speeches were given throughout the night, which was a stark contrast to the dazzling glamour of Cipriani’s decor where the event was held. Model Caron Berstein recounted a nightmare moment in 2003 when she stepped on set for a photoshoot with disgraced photographer Terry Richardson. She says he pulled down her pants till she was naked, and came on her breasts while his assistants watched silently. It sounds like something out of a movie scene but was this model’s nightmare reality. Richardson is now being investigated by the N.Y.P.D over this and numerous other claims from various models and agencies. Richardson has denied allegations of misconduct through his lawyers.

The next step for the foundation will be to launch a free app where insiders can sign up and have constant access to support in the industry. Romanova and Costa hope this will end segregation in the community and freely allow victims to come forward without the societal pressure of keeping quiet.

This is a bold move and we are taking note. Bravo!
