On The Scene: The Manhattan Vintage Show

The Manhattan vintage show; the ultimate event for discovering clothing styles from the last century.

The entrance featured a grand display of former Harper’s Bazaar editor Marilyn Kirschner’s personal vintage collection. The assortment of items included colorful cut and sew pieces, oversized jewellery and well-tailored jackets accompanied by advice from Kirschner to show visitors and vintage enthusiasts, “Don’t be bagged down by trends, they’re so overrated. What’s good is always good and everything comes back in style anyway. It’s not what is deemed ‘in’ or ‘it’ by so called experts. It’s about what appeals to you.”

The event showcased over 70 vendors from across the state presenting fashion, home décor, textiles and art. The show was a great place to discover how vintage clothes influence today’s fashion industry, after rummaging through over 200 items it was clear that fashion styles from the past are constantly being revisited. Amongst the many vendors, the audience was clearly dressed to impress in their timeless outfits ranging from 1920s flapper dressers to ‘80s shoulder pads and everything in between. It was like being transported back in time to an opulent Gatsby party. The event allowed people to find their original style through a range of both high-end designer pieces and local brands from past decades. The extremely knowledgeable staff were happy to educate the visitors about trends, fabrics and brands alongside their personal tips for vintage shopping. The array of items was an inspiration for aspiring designers and collectors but more importantly anyone who wanted to learn about vintage items.
