The Newport Beach Film Festival (NBFF) returned for its milestone 25th year with a stunning lineup of 112 films from 19 countries.

One of the most highly anticipated events of the festival was the star-studded red carpet for the NBFF Honors program, celebrating an extraordinary array of artists who have made a significant impact in the entertainment industry over the past year. Adding to the excitement, Variety’s “10 Actors to Watch” was also recognized, solidifying the festival’s reputation for spotlighting rising talent.

The prestigious event honored a remarkable group of actors, filmmakers, and industry icons who have left an indelible mark on film and television. Topping the list of honorees was the legendary Nicolas Cage, who was presented with the Icon Award. Cage’s prolific career, known for its diversity and fearless performances, was celebrated as he continues to evolve and surprise audiences with every role he takes on.

Chinese American actress and director Joan Chen, a trailblazer in both Hollywood and Asian cinema, was awarded the Career Achievement Award. Her pioneering work in front of and behind the camera continues to break barriers and pave the way for more inclusive storytelling.

The Maverick Award went to Colman Domingo, whose bold choices in both film and theater have made him a standout performer. From his role in Euphoria to Fear the Walking Dead, Domingo’s versatility and depth have cemented him as one of the most captivating actors of his generation.

Other notable honorees included Marianne Jean-Baptiste, who received the Artist of Distinction Award for her impactful body of work, and George McShane, honored with the Spotlight Award for his rising stardom and promising future in Hollywood.

Veteran actress June Squibb received the Lifetime Achievement Award, a tribute to her enduring presence and unforgettable performances in film over the decades.

Additionally, legendary songwriter Diane Warren was recognized with the Lifetime Achievement in Music Award for her unparalleled contributions to film soundtracks and music.

Sheryl Lee Ralph, another honoree for the Artist of Distinction Award, was praised for her powerful performances and her continued advocacy for diversity and representation within the entertainment industry.

Each year, Variety selects 10 up-and-coming actors who have shown immense promise in the industry, and this year’s class did not disappoint. The list included stars from a wide range of genres and backgrounds, each with projects that have left a lasting impression. Monica Barbaro, known for her role in A Complete Unknown, was one of the standout talents. Zoë Chao, who impressed in Nightbitch, brought a dynamic range to her performances, while Ryan Destiny gained acclaim for her role in The Fire Inside. Karla Sofía Gascón, starring in Emilia Perez, and Fred Hechinger, soon to be seen in Gladiator II, were also among the honorees, each pushing the boundaries of their craft.

Rising stars Ella Hunt (Saturday Night) and David Jonsson (Alien: Romulus) made the list for their captivating performances. Josh Rivera, with a standout role in American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez, and Drew Starkey, who stars in Queer, represented a new generation of actors pushing the envelope in diverse storytelling. Rounding out the list was Toby Wallace, who will soon be seen in Eden, bringing fresh energy to every role he plays.

The Newport Beach Film Festival’s Honors program and recognition of Variety’s “10 Actors to Watch” exemplify the festival’s commitment to celebrating both established legends and the next wave of talent shaping the future of film and television. As the NBFF continues to grow, its ability to curate a lineup that honors Hollywood’s most influential figures while spotlighting the freshest faces in the industry makes it a festival to watch—both this year and in the years to come.
