Brazilian designer UMA celebrated a new shop on NYC’s Bleecker Street on Thursday, October 15th, 2015.
Parked on a posh stretch of Bleecker Street in the West Village, UMA’s new store fits perfectly in this context. UMA is a Brazilian clothing brand with shops in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, revered by the in-the-know crowd with its highly trendy wares, chicly artistic direction, and moderately expensive pricing, it read cultural because it is. The opening night was a very Brazilian affair involving a bright, warm crowd of both art lovers and clothing aficionados, a well-paced (see: bossa nova) DJ set and wonderful chocolatey treats and of course a fountain of champagne.
Of course, the focus, the space, with its furniture designs from Brazil’s Espasso was mildly modern with deep notes of grunge and raw energy. It was an idea carried forward with the clothes by UMA: from Celine-esque oranges to the wonderful texture of cottons, to the olfactory delight that is raw leather, it was all so gorgeous. Particularly worth noting were the cardigans with unique embroideries created in collaboration with the Brazilian painter Geova Rodrigues. The cuts ranged from mod and unusual to downright sexy: short and loose black satin dresses, coats in hnter green, there’s a wonderful attention to detail here, the drama of life. Brazil is not slow to recognize the pleasure of a life, and UMA demonstrates the idea can extend to clothes, too.
