If wearing a big hat didn’t incentivize you enough, now you can show off your limited edition Secretariat Cup
The Kentucky Derby is a long awaited event that draws the attention of people throughout the country. Whether you’re in it for the racing, placing bets, large hats, or the drinking, it has something for everyone. And last week, Woodford Reserve held an event to announce its annual $1000 Mint Julep for 2023. The Mint Julep is one of the staples of the Kentucky Derby and this drink honors the 50th anniversary of Secretariat’s Kentucky Derby win. The event was held at Chef’s Dinner Table and guests got to sample the recipe for the $1000 Mint Julep and it was worth every penny. The little fun fact about this recipe is that it calls for 2oz of Woodford Reserve which symbolizes the 2 minutes that it took for Secretariat to win the race.
At the event, guests were also treated to tasty bites served by Chef Adjoa Kittoe. The inspiration for each bite were snacks and bites you think of when you envision the Kentucky Derby as well as classic Southern dishes. As an added bonus, guests were given a live demo by Chef Kittoe on how to make her twist on fried chicken and waffles. The secret to this twist was Chef Kittoe incorporating spices typically used to make jollof rice. And for the waffle component, the chef decided to instead make the waffle using a hushpuppy batter that incorporated jalapeños into the dish. Both components transcended the typical chicken and waffle combo and was juicy, tender, and delicious.
Once the demo was over, the special $1000 Mint Julep cups were unveiled where guests could examine and take in the infamous $1000 cup. What makes these cups so special and worth so much is that each cup is handmade by Louisville-based jeweler from The Vault. And due to this being the 50th anniversary of Secretariat, each cup features a design of Secretariat’s famed blue and white checked silks in sapphires. A total of 150 cups will be available for purchase starting April 13, 2023. Of the 150 cups available, 100 are silver cups retailing for $1,000, and 50 are gold cups retailing for $3,500 and the all proceeds benefit the Secretariat Foundation. So grab your big hats and make your way to the Kentucky Derby on May 6th to get your chance to show off your limited edition cup.
