Music is an art form that conveys a variety of emotions, thoughts, desires, and feelings that cause people to feel connected. The combination of instruments, melodies, rhythms, tones, and vocal ranges create an internalized experience evident throughout each genre. Washington, DC is an umbrella for all categories of music ranging from jazz to hip-hop. The music scene in the nation’s capital is diverse and caters to the masses. There is something for everyone, and here are just a few places to add to your next DC itinerary.

When the Howard Theatre opened in 1910 it was the largest colored theater in the world. During a time of racism and segregation, this theater offered people of all backgrounds a place to come together and connect through the sounds of music. In its early years, many well-known figures graced its stage, such as Duke Ellington, Booker T. Washington, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Dizzy Gilespie, The Supremes, and more. As popular and successful as the Howard Theatre was to the community, in the early 1980s, it was plagued by neglect and eventually closed its doors until 2012. Since reopening, the space has entered into a new era and caters to a large group of music enthusiasts including hip-hop, electronic, pop, jazz, and more.

This establishment is known for showcasing talents such as Sarah Vaughan, Nancy Wilson, Grover Washington Jr., Ramsey Lewis, Charlie Byrd, Maynard Ferguson, and Eva Cassidy.
