In just three episodes, Phat Tuesdays: The Era of Hip Hop Comedy tells the story of how the series creator, Guy Torry, launched an all-Black comedy night at The Comedy Store on the Sunset Strip, LA in the 90’s.
The series, executive produced by Reginald Hudlin, features a number of comedians including Anthony Anderson, Kym Whitley, Tiffany Haddish, Steve Harvey, Regina King, Nick Cannon, DeRay Davis and more. The bunch share their journeys in the comedy industry and how they formed a strong community in a predominantly white industry.
A comedian himself, Torry saw firsthand that black comedians were unable to tell their stories and promote themselves in Hollywood. He also noticed audiences tendency to forget that comedians are humans too. “We’re not just court jesters, and clowns and buffoons,” Torry asserted in an exclusive interview with Knock. “We’re healers, we are storytellers, we are doctors. We take your kind off of your problems, and we tell our stories and share our pain at the same time,” he concluded.
