Theater Review: ‘Married But Single’

Love, betrayal and tons of humor are the elements of Je’Caryous Johnson’s latest play, “Married but Single.”

The show includes a multi-talented and veteran array of actors including LisaRaye McCoy, Chrisette Michele, Carl Payne, Clifton Powell, Terrell Carter, Robert C. Riley, Samson Logan, and La’Myia Good embarking on a commonly explored journey with a wild twist! Deciding when to cut ties with a long time fling is usually tough but Sharon Wilson (played by LisaRaye McCoy) is willing to go to extreme lengths to teach her man the timeless lesson of what happens when you don’t appreciate someone until their gone.

There were skin chilling vocal performances by Sharon’s turbulent love interest Julian Johnson (Terrell Carter) and the soulful songbird Chrisette Michele. Carl Payne hilariously nails the role of relentless pimp posing as an advocate to the global players of the world in a bout against commitment. Payne was so remarkable that even his cast-mates struggled to deny their urges to chuckle at his presumably ad-libbed lines. Breaking the fourth wall repeatedly during the run of show resulted in an eruption of laughter from attendees which lasted several minutes before composure was regained and the actors were able to resume. The hit performance is certain to produce a compelling wave of pure entertainment before the evening is over.
