On February 9th, Atlanta’s acclaimed Trap Music Museum hosted the grand opening of their Black History Month exhibit dedicated to honoring black-owned businesses and artists making waves throughout Atlanta.

The exhibit, entitled “Black Currency” focuses on local black businesses and artists striving to push forward the collective culture of the city’s communities, emphasizing the importance of investing back in to black communities.

Legendary strip club Magic City, popular tattoo shop City of Ink and trendy vintage retail store Versus ATL were among the honorees present that night.

Other businesses highlighted that night were Slim + Husky’s Pizza, non-profit grassroots organization Paw Kids, photography company Collective Gallery and music tech platform TmrO.

Trap Music Museum Founder and Rapper T.I. also made a special appearance later on in the night to help honor the eight businesses, one of which also belongs to him. Akoo Clothing, which stands for A King Of Oneself, was co-founded by the Grammy-winning rapper in late 2008 and has since grown in to one of the most popular men’s fashion brands.

And it’s not a museum without art.

Visual artists Doran Starks, Travon Lee, Tiffany Davis, Geryn Harris, Jillian Williams, Sean Marques, Rovelle Williams and Dane Brown were able to present their art installations throughout the museum.

Original paintings from local black artists adorned the walls of every room, ranging from architectural to portraits of famous southern musicians.

The Trap Music Museum opened in 2018 as a temporary pop-up but has since evolved in to one of the hottest tourist attractions.

The “Black Currency” exhibit will run through the rest of Black History Month so guest can catch the installment up until February 28th. Check out photos from the special night below.
