And the category is … GLAAD Award 2019 realness.
GLAAD, the world’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) media advocacy organization, announced recipients for the remaining 13 of this year’s 27 categories for the 30th Annual GLAAD Media Awards. Madonna received the Advocate for Change Award from Anderson Cooper, while Andy Cohen received the Vito Russo Award from Golden Globe-winning actress Sarah Jessica Parker at the star-studded ceremony at the Hilton Midtown in New York. The 30th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York were hosted by drag superstar Shangela.
Celebrating its 30th year the Annual GLAAD awards came to New York City with a collection of star-studded attendees ready to walk the ball in honor of sharing a message of representation and inclusion for the LGBTQ community in media. Holding the iconic ceremony at the Hilton in downtown Manhattan created the perfect setting for what was the beginning of a legendary and inspiring evening. Attendees packed the red carpet in both classic tie realness and trailblazing couture gowns. While serving looks that seemed to come straight of fashion’s hottest runways; the celebrity guest still made time to make sure their message was heard.
We caught up with such celebs such as Rosie O’Donnell who had the honor of presenting Madonna with the Advocate for Change Award had a warm message of invitation.
The Knockturnal: What would you say to some who is struggling to live their truth?
Rosie O’Donnell: We’re here and we have our open arms waiting to embrace our young. Come on over the water is fine.
The advice for young individuals who may be struggling with the choice to live their truth didn’t stop them. Walking Dead star Daniel Newman gave us something he learned through the years.
Daniel Newman: Find the strength inside yourself to just be honest, be out. It’s crazy that you can have this idea that life is gonna suck afterward but then you realize it’s just amazing.
The night continued to celebrating the theme in representation and living one’s truth with the nominees. One of the biggest nominees of the night was “Pose”. The show dives into the world of ball culture in the 1980s through the eyes of a group of transgender characters. Cast members such as Indya Moore is all too familiar with this struggle while growing up in the Bronx. Now with a hit show on TV and place on the Times 100 list, Indya is working to create a safe place for anyone who has walked in her shoes.
Indya Moore: We’re still black, we’re still brown and we’re still from the Bronx. And it’s really important that y’all create spaces for us to be safe. I wanna create those bridges in my community.
The show has touch many viewers to feel comfortable in their own truth. As the GLAAD awards celebrate that with a nomination for the show. One cast member walked the red carpet feeling that message in her life as she takes steps into the light of her career.
MJ Rodriguez: I would have never ever dreamed this. I didn’t think it would to complete like 360 and it would happen for me the way it happened for me. I feel good and I finally have the confidence. You know feels good to live in my truth.
The GLAAD Awards airs May 12th at 8pm/7pm central, taking with it the message of love and truth.
