Exclusive: Sophie Okonedo Talks New Amazon Series ‘Flack’ [Video]

by Briana Atkins January 17, 2021
written by Briana Atkins

Academy Award nominee Sophie Okonedo is back on the small screen once again. While some may hold in recent memory her character in Ratched, she’s taken on something completely new in this series, Flack, which will be streaming soon on Amazon Prime Video.

Okonedo plays Caroline, the brash, forceful, leader of a London PR firm, Mills Paulson, that handles their celebrity clients’ public scandals. The show itself focuses on Robyn (Anna Paquin), a take-no-prisoner public-relations professional, who is an American working for the London based firm. Robyn is unflappable in her PR job and her ability to get her high-profile very wayward ill-behaved celebrity clients out of potentially embarrassing situations is unparalleled. However, her ability to get her clients out of these messes does not translate into her own life as Robyn tries to get her own life back on track while juggling her job. Along for the ride are a young, but eager Scottish intern, Melody, Robyn’s cynical, yet sexy coworker, and best friend, and of course, their fearless leader, Caroline. Sophie Okonedo sat down with The Knockturnal to talk about Flack, her enjoyment of playing strong female characters, and what it was like to work with Anna Paquin.

Flack streams on Amazon Prime Video starting Jan. 22.

Highlights From The ‘Feeling Through’ Special Screening and Panel

by Samantha Coulter January 17, 2021
written by Samantha Coulter

On Thursday, January 16th, the short film Feeling Through, by Doug Roland, hosted a live accessible Q&A with Roland, the stars of the film, the CEO of Hellen Keller Services, and the executive producers, via YouTube.

Feeling Through follows 18-year-old Tereek, a struggling teen wandering the streets of New York City, as he assists a DeafBlind man named Artie, that he meets on a street corner, find his way to the bus stop. Tereek waits with Artie at the bus stop to make sure he gets home safely. By the end of their time together, Artie and Tereek form a deep connection that inspires Tereek and changes him forever.

Feeling Through stars the first DeafBlind actor in a leading role, Robert Tarango, alongside rising actor Steven Prescod. The film was inspired by a real-life experience the filmmaker had with a DeafBlind person one night in New York City. This short film has played at many international film festivals and has won thirteen awards so far, including The Audience Award at Naples International Film Festival and The Audience Awards at the San Diego International Film Festival.

The Q&A began with the filmmaker Doug Roland talking about what inspired the film. Roland said “This has been in many ways a ten-year journey in the making…I was coming home late one night, when I was still living in New York City and I saw a man standing on the street corner holding a sign that said ‘I’m deaf and blind I need help crossing the street.’” During that meeting, Roland ended up having a whole conversation with the man and went from seeing him as a stranger to a friend. “It was an interaction that really stuck with me and moved me on a number of different levels. Like a lot of writers, I immediately got to it and started writing that story. But it lived on my computer for a number of years because just didn’t feel like I was ready to do it in the right way,” said Douglas. It wasn’t until three years ago, that he reached out to the Hellen Keller National Center with his idea for a short film about his experience. He came into contact with Sue Ruzenski, the executive director of the center, and began the process of making this film.

Next, Roland asks Robert Tarango what it feels like to be a movie star. Tarango replied “I still can’t believe that I’m the first time DeafBlind actor and a movie star. It’s just so inspirational and to really be able to see myself on screen is just amazing. I’ll never forget that experience of watching myself for the first time.” Tarango also added that he felt a bit awkward watching himself on screen but that it was worth it. “I can’t emphasize how inspiring it is to really be able to show the world that DeafBlind can. And how good that makes me feel and the impact that it’ll have on the future and I’m hoping that I can make more movies in the future” he said.

Later in the Q&A, Steven Prescod talks about elements of his own life that have helped prepare him for his role as Tereek. Prescod said “What sparked me to want to be an actor started when I was fourteen. There was a director that wanted the kids to audition for an independent film and that was the first project that I did that gave me my acting spark. From there I tried to get into schools but it was very difficult to stay in because of the funds—that my mom had trouble keeping up with. So I lost ambition and found myself incarcerated at the age of sixteen because I was hanging around with kids that were bored. We didn’t have any phones or iPads or anything to keep us occupied. But thankfully I was given a second chance.” The judge on his case sentenced him to do a six months program where he did a paid internship for a not-for-profit business that had a performing arts program, which ended up helping Prescod to turn his life around.

Next, Roland asks Sue Ruzenski to talk more about the Hellen Keller Services. The Hellen Keller National Center was integral to helping to create Feeling Through and provides a great deal of services for the DeafBlind community. Ruzenski said, “Hellen Keller Services is an organization that provides an array of services and programs. They’re rooted deep in Brooklyn and they’ve been there for 127 years but one division of Hellen Keller Services is the Hellen Keller National Center. That is a program that is really the only kind that exists in the country… We have a residential vocational training program that is located on Long Island. People come from around the country to gain skills to be independent and to succeed with employment… with the ultimate goal for them to have the best life they could have.”

Roland then asks Marlee Matlin, a famous deaf actor who executive produced Feeling Through, to talk about her experience as a deaf actor. She begins by sharing that it’s been difficult to work as a deaf actress and that she has to be proactive in finding roles for herself. Matlin even shared a recent experience she had with a director who offered her a chance to play a deaf judge who later revoked that offer when he realized she would need an interpreter. “That happened within the last year so I think everybody like Doug did, has to do their homework. Has to understand how to work with an actor. How to portray them authentically. How to be able to create a character on the screen that tells a good story, whether you are talking about film or television” she said. Marlee also added that bringing interpreters on set should not be seen as such a big deal but rather another level that is added to a film to tell a better story. She said “The deaf community and the acting community has work to do. And the work is that we can provide the opportunity to educate. We cant get angry if you guys don’t know this kind of stuff. We just have to sit down and communicate and educate and talk. That’s basically what it is at the end of the day.”

To close the Q&A Roland answered a few of the remaining audience questions about the film. One audience member asked Roland to talk more about the Feeling Through Live series on the film’s youtube channel. He said that Feeling Through has become so much more than just a film. It has turned into a community where people are able to communicate with one another, share their collective experience, and learn from each other. “Ultimately we realized there is this need to try to find a way to use technology to keep people connected. So I created Feeling Through Live, which is a weekly live stream, that again continuing the beautiful partnership with Hellen Keller Services, is a weekly accessible live stream with captions and interpreter that is meant to provide a platform for people that are deaf, blind, and beyond. So we talk to all different people in the disability community about topics relevant to everyone” he said.

Feeling Through can be seen online at the Slamdance film festival in February.

Exclusive: Aedin Mincks Talks ‘Cobra Kai’ Season 3 [Video]

by Emerson Unger January 16, 2021
written by Emerson Unger
Netflix’s Cobra Kai is back for a third season. With a new season comes new challenges and growth for characters like Mitch played by Aedin Mincks. We caught up with Mincks to chat about his character’s growth over this current season, what’s it like to train in the Cobra Kai universe and where would he like to see his care to go for season four which has already been greenlit by Netflix.

As far as Mincks’s character’s journey, he simply says, “we were like nerdy fans at first and then I just progressed into kind of a dick and then I redeemed myself.” Now, his character is clearly on the path to redeeming himself and standing up to bullies. His character takes on being bullied and dealing with bullies head-on and channeling his pain into bringing change.  He knowledges that his characters path along with the series has spurred on a revival of kids getting back into karate. “It’s kind of cool seeing a surge of popularity from it and encouraging kids to go out work out and have fun,” he says.

It is not all fun and games. Mincks noted that karate and this role is not physically easy. He joked that the role like most in the series is “authentically physical.” As for injuries and physicality of his role, Mincks says, “the most painful thing that would actually happen a lot was shin on shin [action]… it’s just like the bone of the leg [is] clashing.”  Mincks describes despite wearing protection, you can still feel it. “It’s a tiny bruise but it hurts really bad there for a long time and it’s there for a long time,” he says.
Mincks is fine with war wounds brought on by the hard work on set, but he does hope that his character will have more moments with Chris in season four. “I want to kick more ass with Chris,” he explains.  He admits that he misses filming with his friend. Furthermore, Mincks does have another desire, of course, “I want a rematch with Joe for getting me kicked out of Cobra Kai,” he half-heartedly joked, but in seriousness wants.

Season three of Cobra Kai is currently on Netflix. It is rumored that season four is in production.

The YouTube turned Netflix series Cobra Kai is back for its third season. We caught up with one of the show’s stars, Vanessa Rubio, who plays Carmen, to chat about her character’s evolution in the current season, her future for upcoming seasons, and of course, what is it like to share the screen with Johnny.  Plus, we asked her if she felt like she was missing out on all the karate action and training.

“First off, I love Carmen. She’s such a beautiful character to play and dig into.  She just keeps evolving in this really beautiful way,” Rubio remarked about her character Carmen. Spoiler alert! In this season, Carmen’s character faces many challenges as her son Miguel tries to regain his strength and walk again all while developing a somewhat secretive, romantic relationship with Johnny.  Addressing the elephant in the room, Rubio was quick to remark, “I would love to see her flesh out the complicated feelings that she has for Johnny.” As for more wishes for her character in the future, Rubio says, “I would love to see her [Carmen] dance more. I would love to see her get her sense of power back…have fun you know. Miguel is out of the wheelchair.”

Speaking of power back, we had to press Rubio about her experience in the Karate Kid and Cobra Kai world. We had to ask her, given the fact that her character doesn’t necessarily practice the art of karate, does she feel like she’s missing out on some seriously awesome karate skills and training? Also, would she ever want to see Carman take down some bad guys and make some moves? Rubio simply said, “for sure, I would love to get training!” She noted that as an actor she would really love to get the opportunity to train and practice some real kick-ass choreography. As far as her character, she couldn’t help but acknowledge the fact that if Carmen ever received the training and was given the opportunity, she “would be a badass!”

Cobra Kai’s season three is currently on Netflix. The series is rumored to be in production on its fourth season.

Exclusive: Meg Fraser and Ben O’toole Talk Starring In New Thriller ‘Bloody Hell’ [Video]

by Sydney Hargrove January 16, 2021
written by Sydney Hargrove

The traditional narrative for what a horror film looks like is constantly altering and adapting through the minds of incredibly creative directors, and even so, Alister Grierson’s new thriller manages to stand out among them all.

Bloody Hell, starring Ben O’Toole and Meg Fraser, follows the life of Rex, a man who’s life turns upside down in a matter of seconds as he finds himself right in the middle of a bank robbery, and his own quick thinking leads the bank patrons to safety, but him straight to jail.

During his time in prison, a vital video of the event crowns Rex a newfound celebrity, but the attention isn’t exactly what he wants. Fed up with his new life, Rex flees the country, only to arrive in a sadistic game of chance and torture, in a place so much worse than where he came from. What makes Bloody Hell so unique is the way that Fraser and O’Toole combine comedy with their horror performances, creating lighthearted comic relief amidst the bone chilling atmosphere of the film itself. This is a narrative that we don’t typically see in horror films, creating and incredibly unique and immersive movie experience for all to enjoy. The mind of Grierson creates a can’t miss cinematic event.

We had the chance to sit down with Ben and Meg to talk about their performances. Check out the full conversation. The film is now playing.

Exclusive: Frank Stallone Discusses His New Film, ‘Stallone: Frank, That Is’ [Video]

by Niki Cruz January 13, 2021
written by Niki Cruz

Frank Stallone has had a long and winding career in the entertainment industry as a musician, actor, and boxer. Now, he’s the subject of his own documentary “Stallone: Frank, That Is.”

The documentary captures Stallone, the younger brother of Sylvester, as he recounts a series of moments throughout his career. From going off on his own in 1964 as a young musician to opening for THE Bruce Springsteen. His big break came with songs featured in the hit “Rocky” films and later on disco’s finest “Staying Alive.” In both films, he’s rubbing elbows with its respective stars Sylvester Stallone and John Travolta. As an actor, he’s been featured in “Rocky,” “Miami Vice,” and “Hudson Hawk,” “Tombstone,” and “Fred Clause.”

As someone who has seen all sides of the industry over four decades, it was only a matter of time before someone decided to make a documentary about Stallone’s journey in the industry alongside Hollywood’s biggest heavyweights.

Director Derek Wayne Johnson highlights the Golden Globe and Grammy-nominated artist’s big breaks and the rough patches both on and off the stage, with commentary by colleagues Richie Sambora, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Billy Dee Williams, and family members Sylvester Stallone and his late mother, Jackie Stallone.

It’s Frank’s authenticity that shines through, as he tells unbelievable stories of working with today’s legends and his inspiring story of always getting back up from a knockout.

“Stallone, Frank That Is” is available on January 19th on Digital & VOD.
