From Jackie Robinson to Little Rock, there’s little doubt Sheen Center is killing it this year.
Sheen Center for Thought & Culture, located on Bleecker Street and home to events and memorabilia of the Catholic faith, took it upon themselves to tell the stories of Black America’s greatest – just in time for the February shine. It all started with simple conversation.

The orators chose to speak of their personal struggles in relation to their work. For Major Jackson, his poems and essay collections. For Sapphire, her bestselling novels “Push” and “The Kid”. For Patrick Phillips, his novel “Blood at the Root” and his poetry collections. The repertoire of content behind these names speaks for itself, as Race in America promoted sensible discussion on racial terror and exploitation behind the common man. Going further into this, howΒ doΒ we learn from the sorts of uncomfortable experiences we come into contact with? The events of Little Rock back in the 1950’s says we achieve this by paying attention.
“Little Rock: The Staged Reading” rang home the indisputable fact that being Black is tough. The play premiered last week Thursday, with general management from Walker Communications, and had special guest Carlotta Walls-LaNier, a member of the nine, attend the event. It was something. But if the play had any say, it was thatΒ being Black in the 1950’s seemed a social death sentence; capital punishment complete with the mockery of your peers from the White majority and the ire of those in power towards your very existence.

And it was all certainly worth the time.
Today marks the opening of the newest collaboration being featured at Story, a space that is part gallery, part publication, and part retail experience. This time, founder Rachel Shechtman and the rest of the Story staff have teamed up with USA Network to bring to fans a sensory experience centered around last yearβs breakout hit Mr. Robot.
The space has been broken down into four sections: the Founders, the Innovators, the Expressionists, and the Union of 1s. The Founders section features architectural garments from NYCβs own The Arrivals, a limited edition jacket inspired by Elliotβs signature sheath, and items from other entrepreneurial brands. The Innovators faction features a wearable iPhone charger by Q Designs, Prynt Cases that turn your phone into a camera and printer, and more innovative tech. The Expressionists consist of limited edition Mr. Robot inspired Stance socks, wearable art from Shantell Martin, and even prints and goodies with designs from Mr. Robotβs own Carly Chaikin. The Union of 1s rounds out Storyβs many offerings with more branded merchandise such as water bottles featuring the phrase βhello, friendsβ and iPhone cases sporting the F Society mask.
Guests at the opening event this morning were treated to breakfast while they browsed and read item descriptions written in the style of a hacker on Mr. Robot. There are a variety of interactive displays in the space including an ATM that must be βhacked,β an intuitive bookshelf, and a workspace where fans can get exclusive information on the much anticipated second season. Chaikin attended the opening and poked fun at herself for being an actress who likes to paint on the side, but as she said it is more than just βfinger paintingsβ with her. Chaikin showed off her artistic prowess by painting her own interpretation of the F Society mask which will be sold on backpacks, t-shirts, notebooks, and more.
The Mr. Robot collaboration is open to the public in Story at 144 10th Avenue (19th Street). Check out the techy goodness in preparation for Mr. Robotβs second season premiering July 13th on USA Network.
