On the Scene: NewFest Film Festival

by Lenique Vincent November 10, 2022
written by Lenique Vincent

NYC based LGBTQ+ film festival, NewFest, teamed up with Netflix to create the New Voices Filmmakers Grant. Four recipients, Blanche Akonchong, Livia Huang, Rodney Llaverias and Nyla Moon, were honored at Nitehawk Cinema in Brooklyn on October 17.

Winners of $25,000 each and a year of mentorship, the filmmakers gathered for a panel to discuss their films and journey’s thus far.

Blanche Akonchong directed “Mercury Afrograde,” a film depicting a family’s struggle when their secrets are revealed during mercury retrograde. “I edited it, colored it, I composed the music,” Akonchong told the Knockturnal. “I literally spent the whole first quarter of the pandemic just working on it. It was my catharsis.” The film received NewFest’s Emerging Black LGBTQ+ Director Award in 2020. Blanche is an actor, writer, director and musician who hails from Riverdale, Georgia with Cameroonian roots.

New York native filmmaker and actor, Nyla Moon, created “How Not to Date While Trans.” “I realized that there wasn’t a lot of stories by trans women about the trans experience,” Moon noted. “This is such a fun film and it’s like a love story to the trans community because everyone always talks about our experiences but they don’t listen to us, so I wanted to create this story so people could understand what it’s like actually dating as a trans person.” With this accomplishment, Moon continues to produce and act in more original works.

Working on the development of their first feature film while living between the Dominican Republic and Bogota, filmmaker Rodney Llaverias  won the New Fest prize for “The Two-Headed Calf.” In the film, the protagonist comes to terms with their sexuality; a monumental event for most  audiences don’t get to see from the queer point of view. “I really wanted to tell this story,” Llaverias admitted on the panel. “I had a very late flourishing when it came to my sexuality (…) I was really tapping into my past, my past traumas; I really wanted to talk about my relationship with my father and what that meant for me.”

“More Happiness,” by Livia Huang also explored parental relationships. “I think we all have evolving relationships with our mothers,” Huang said. “I just had these conversations that I couldn’t really let go of, and ‘More Happiness’ has this conversation with a real mother and daughter pair interspersed with the protagonist’s past memories about the past love affair with her ex girlfriend.” Huang, a Baltimore bred director, created the film as a thesis for Brooklyn College, two years ago.

Creating safe havens for queer communities since 1988, New Fest also dedicated the evening to celebrating thriving artists including Big Mouth’s Brandon Kyle Goodman, Wendell & Wild’s Sam Zelaya and Dead End: Paranormal Park’s; Zach Barack.

On the Scene: Lobos 1707 Tequila Tasting and Pairing

by Lenique Vincent November 10, 2022
written by Lenique Vincent

Four spirits were the highlight of the Lobos 1707 Tequila Tasting and Pairing on October 26 in NYC. Hosted by Founder, Diego Osorio, the evening was dedicated to appreciating the Lobos 1707 Joven, Mezcal Artesanal, Reposado and Extra Añejo expressions as both beverages and ingredients via cocktails and tasty h’ordeuvres. While entertaining guests in the Lobos Headquarters, Diego was able to explain how the brand came to be.

“Everything goes back to a story,” Diego explained to the Knockturnal. “The story told is my great-great-grandfather went from Spain to Mexico with some sherry wine barrels, drank them, filled them up with agave liquor; and then realized it tasted a lot better.” Often used to age whiskeys and bourbons, Diego’s family decided to partner sherry and Tequila. Each expression contains this special ingredient, also known as Pedro Ximenez, despite their contrasting flavors.

What started out as a creative outlet and something for friends to enjoy, turned into a company thriving in partnership with Lebron James. “We’re building something to stay,” Osorio asserted. “I think other brands are trying to capitalize and make just a moment, and sell something. We want to make something that’s  here to stay.”

Check out Lobos 1707 for the next Taco Tuesday or gathering with friends. Like the company slogan says, “Protect your pack. Drink responsibly.”

Review: The Chick-Inn Opens Ambient New Location in Kips Bay

by Sydney Hargrove October 19, 2022
written by Sydney Hargrove

With the success of its Harlem location, the team behind the chicken-any-way-you-like-it restaurant has expanded (or, in more proper terms, spread its wings) at an all-new location in Kips Bay.  Located at 415 3rd Ave, the brand-new spot is the perfect mix of ambiance and comfort, with its beautiful, trendy interior and delicious food that will remind anyone of home with its many customizable options.

Opened just one year ago, The Chick Inn gained popularity for its fresh approach to comfort food classics, served in a country-style environment. Founded by chef and industry vet Steven Gallo and partners Pierluigi Ossani and Francesco Capolongo, the new restaurant will bring an inviting atmosphere to the neighborhood for customers to feel right at home.
Starting in the restaurant industry as a young kid, working every job in his family’s restaurants – from dishwasher, busboy, server, bartender and manager– Gallo learned at an early age that sticking to the basics by offering great food and service results in a great restaurant. The Chick Inn will be inspired by the comfort that comes from staying at a cozy ‘inn’ (bed and fireplace not included)with charming features with elevated farmstead decor- such as wildlife mosaic busts, key rings with tassels – for your check in- and artwork and paintings with landscapes and outdoor portraits framed in gold on white washed brick and brown spotted accent walls. The bright and chirpy space all adheres to the neutral palette of white, beige and brown, brightened up with green plants hanging from doors and the back bar.

The new location is absolutely beautiful, the first thing you see is the beautifully crafted exterior with chic plants and a very open atmosphere. Inside, the dim lighting and candles provide a cozy yet trendy and beautiful atmosphere. Everyone was buzzing with conversation and excitement when we visited the spot for dinner on Friday evening, and we were far from disappointed by the upbeat mood of our surroundings.

The extensive menu included a variety of high-quality quicken dishes, including their Rotisserie (served as a whole, half or quarter), marinated for 24-hours and seasoned with a Peruvian rub, then charred on the outside and served with a cilantro sauce. The Fried Chicken is battered in buttermilk resulting in a flaky, crunchy bite on the outside and a tender juicy bite on the inside and comes in a variety of forms including Fried Chicken Sandwiches and Wings. In addition, to offer something for everyone, the restaurant offers other sandwiches including a Lobster Roll for endless summer inspired dishes, and Vegan options with fried cauliflower prepared in a buffalo wing sauce, Vegan Sandwich served with soy protein, flame roasted red peppers, shredded romaine, and a basil pesto aioli and many more mouthwatering Bites like their popular spicy vodka rice, mac & cheese or chicken cheese balls.
We started off with the classic chips and guacamole, the delicious comfort food adding to the atmosphere. For dinner, I went with The Sweet Chick, a crispy chicken sandwich complete with avocado, smoked bacon, lettuce, honey mustard. The sandwich was carefully crafted and bursting with flavor, which makes perfect sense considering the restaurant’s attention to detail. For desert, we enjoyed a deliciously rich chocolate mousse cake, which did not disappoint.
We can’t reccomend trying out The Chick Inn for yourself! The restaurant’s hours of opperation are Hours of operation are Sunday-Thursday, 11a-10pm, Friday-Saturday, 11-11pm, Happy Hour Mon-Fri (4-7p) with discounts on food and drink selections with wine, beer and the inn spritz. Sunday Night special for $15 (4-10p) will include ½ Chicken and any 2 sides. Hear more about it here!

Chef Jonghun Won brought a taste of Europe to Midtown Manhattan in the form of cafe and bakery, Pavé. After leaving his home in South Korea to open Jungsik New York and New Jersey’s La Tabatiere, Chef Won teamed up with partner, Jin Ahn, to create the rustic Pavé which opened its doors on September 21. Taking pride in their daily baked bread, Pavé also offers coffee’s and teas to accompany specialty seasonal sandwiches and pastries.

The Knockturnal was invited to a Pavé tasting on October 12. Starting off with the Burrata salad, the sweetness of the marinated tomatoes complimented by the crunchy pistachios definitely woke the taste buds.  Next was the savory Croque Monsieur. This ham and cheese sandwich mixes Gruyère and Béchamel with spicy Dijon mustard on a warm and soft sourdough bread. Just as savory, was the Country Pâté which is topped with tart cornichon pickles on a firm, but doughy baguette. Similar to a Sicilian slice, the Chorizo-Zucchini Focaccia is a delicious mix of sausage, mozzarella, basil and of course; thinly sliced zucchini. For desert, we indulged in a few pastries. To start we had a fluffy brioche slice filled with a passionfruit sauce, the perfect sugar kick for anyone with a sweet tooth. Next up was the Green Tea Scone which was full of white chocolate that was flavorful but not overpowering; a great pair for tea. Lastly, it was only right to close off on a classic chocolate chip cookie that was crunchy in all the right places.

Check out  Pavé on Tuesdays-Fridays from 8am-3pm to unwind the Parisian way, in a tranquil space while wafting the smell of bread baking from opening to closing.

With help from love connector, Bumble, and Netflix’s Strong Black Lead team; the festivities kicked off with a Black Love Brunch hosted by ENTERGALATIC star, Teyana Taylor. Kid Cudi, who voices  the shows artistic protagonist “Jabari,” was in attendance alongside his co-star Jessica Williams; who voices Jabari’s love interest, a photographer named “Meadow.” Williams, no stranger to the rom-com genre, is also know for her role in HBO’s Love Life. Going from “Mia,” to “Meadow,” Williams described ENTERGALACTIC in two words: “Juicy and funny.” “Juicyfunny,” she exclaimed in a brief interview, making the two words one.

That evening, the red carpet was rolled out for cast, crew and various VIPS before the series premiere held at New York’s Paris Theatre. More cast mates, including Ty Dolla $ign, and executive producers such as Dennis Cummings and Fletcher Moules came out to celebrate with Vagina macaroons (a nod to an ENTERGALACTIC episode), drinks, mini bowls of pasta and more at Nebula NYC.

Fancy Drinks and even Fancier Views at the New Rooftop Bar Nubeluz atop the Ritz Carlton New York, NoMad

by Catherina Gioino September 27, 2022
written by Catherina Gioino

Inside the new rooftop bar Nubeluz at the Ritz Carlton New York, NoMad

Set your sights straight to the 50th floor of the Ritz Carlton New York, NoMad where world-renowned Chef José Andrés opened a new cocktail bar that is just dying to be your next Insta background. Aptly named Nubeluz – a portmanteau of the Spanish words “nube” and “luz” for cloud and light, respectively – the rooftop bar is an electrifying 21st-century reiteration of velvet conversation pits, domed golden chandeliers, and eclectic geometric lamps, bringing the 1970s open plan living fully to [night]life.

Ahead of its Saturday opening, The Knockturnal was among a few special guests to tour the rooftop bar – which boasts 270-degree views of the city from two outdoor terraces, complete with full frontal views of the Empire State Building just up the block. The generously poured sparkling wine during the event certainly matched the bold and bright colors of not only the interior bar but also the bar’s developers, Dayssi and Paul Kanavos of the Flag Luxury Group.

Designed by the London-based Martin Brudnizki Design Studio, the sights and sounds were all front and center ahead of Nubeluz’s opening. “When we first envisioned this property with Rafael Viñoly,” the Uruguayan architect behind 432 Park, “we knew that the views would be spectacular and we needed to create an equally striking space inside for guests to be fully immersed in the beauty and glamour of New York at night,” said Flag Luxury Group President Dayssi Olarte de Kanavos.

Dayssi Olarte de Kanavos, Paul Kanavos

“Nubeluz draws energy and inspiration from the great city of New York, which completely surrounds you here 500 feet in the air,” Chef Andrés said in a press release.

The bar’s floor-to-ceiling windows bring that love for New York’s nightlife into new … light. One can stand at one edge of the bar and feel like they’re grabbing drinks with the Met Life Tower itself, and be able to look across the open concept bar to spot people atop the Empire State – if the massive line of people looking to grab a drink at the onyx-counter bar ever dissipates.

Now open, the bar deliciously serves up opulent bar bites such as oysters, foie gras, sweet cones, and the ever-popular caviar bump. For those who really want to ball out, you can grab 125 grams of Giaveri Beluga caviar for only $950. The drinks are no laughing matter – led by Andrés’ ThinkFoodGroup’s cocktail innovator Miguel Lancha, the moderately priced mocktails and cocktails will surely leave you wanting more.  You can check out the extensive wine list and other small bites on the menu here.

Afraid of heights but want good bites? Not to worry – you can still have the José Andrés food at a much lower elevation. The Ritz Carlton New York, NoMad features two additional Andrés restaurants for guests and visitors alike. The street-level Zaytinya offers a Turkish-inspired Mediterranean mezze menu, while the Bazaar by José Andrés gives hungry visitors an “Avante Garde” delectable dining option.

Nubeluz is open Sunday through Wednesday from 4 PM to 12 AM and Thursday through Saturday from 4 PM to 1 AM. You can make a reservation here.

Moore Kismet Electrified NYC’s Electronic Zoo Music Festival 3.0

by Emerson Unger September 26, 2022
written by Emerson Unger

@moorekismet

It was a returned to something wonderful for Moore Kismet. They returned to Randall’s Island for this year’s legendary and iconic Electronic Zoo Music Festival 3.0. After playing a dynamic set, we caught up with Moore Kismet to get the 411 on this year’s EZoo and what is next for the artist.

First off, we had to ask this young and talented artist, who has played Lollapalooza and Coachella, what was it like playing NYC’s Electronic Zoo Music Festival. They responded by saying, “New York is kind of a second home for me because I have family out in the surrounding areas and they make me and my mom feel so safe and happy.” They expressed that New York is a dream for them.  “Getting to perform in NYC is something I really wanted to do more because they have so many iconic venues I haven’t even touched yet,” they said.

As for the set, Moore Kismet admitted, “I normally just put together a collection of some of my favorite songs of myself, my favorite artists, and my friends. From there, I play a completely improvised set where I try my hardest to play a set that the crowd can get into because we do this for them.” Getting that right vibe is not easy. They acknowledge, “I’ve been trying to do more recently is figure out how to cultivate good sonic energy around my music, not just finding open places to stick my unreleased songs in a set.” One of the highlights of their show for Moore Kismet “was this edit I made of “Outside” by Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding and “earthsea.” by kosu that went the entire fuck off so that was fun.”

But for Moore Kismet, which means “more than fate,” music is just one part of the puzzle. Standing out, pushing boundaries and being a voice for the LGBTQ+ community is another important part of their identity. “For as long as I resonate with my identity, I will continue to do my best to be a voice for our community,” Moore Kismet admitted.  They explained, “there are so many going on right now in this world that we need to focus on giving a platform to. One of those most pressing things is the continued threats of the full removal and outlawing of LGBTQ+ rights. It affects me, it affects a good chunk of my fans, and it will affect millions of people in the country who share this community with us.”

As for the music, Moore Kismet has unique production style and stage presence, which they explain as a “wild animal on stage. “They acknowledge it’s “because it gives me this unwavering sense of joy and energy that feels very emotionally freeing.” Furthermore, Moore Kismet adds “Over the years, I’ve drawn inspiration from so many different artists in so many different genres that it’s almost impossible to pinpoint a genre in or concoct some other form of label for my music.” Moore Kismet states, “I create music based on what I feel and what I’m inspired by in the moment. This correlates to how I choose sounds to work with, how I write melodies, how I mix songs, everything. Everything is influenced by inspiration. And I think I’ve gotten to a point in my career recently where I’m finding so many sources of hope for innovation and feeling in music that it just encourages me to keep pushing forward with my creations and to keep sharing my stories in the way I feel comfortable doing so.”

As for what is next, Moore Kismet notes, “I’m currently working on a fairly decent sized EP full of songs that lean predominantly on a reimagined concept of my heavy electronic sound that people originally discovered me from. It will more than likely drop early next year and serve as a buffer between UNIVERSE and my next album, which is also in the beginning stages of writing at the moment. This EP will have some songs that sound nothing like that heavier style people liked, but a lot of them were very nostalgic and freeing to write because I got to challenge myself to write something like what I’d used to when I was a little kid barely making it by in the industry, but now with more style and identity behind it.” Moore Kismet adds, “I can’t wait to share more details about it soon!!”

Moore Kismet new EP should be out soon, but for more information on them check out their website: www.moorekismet.com

by Sydney Hargrove September 23, 2022
written by Sydney Hargrove

Hudson Yards is now home to New York City’s newest entertainment venue. And not only that, but the midnight theater will also be home to Mastercard’s new Innovative Multisensory Experiences, and the very first home at that. The beautiful 160-seat theater has a cozy, art deco feel that will make audience members feel like theyre floating as they enjoy the music and shows that the venue has to offer.

“After over 20 years of creating film, TV and digital content, I’m thrilled for Dolphin to make its first foray into a brick-and-mortar, live entertainment venue with the debut of our major investment, Midnight Theatre,” CEO Bill O’Dowd said. “We couldn’t have a more creative and hardworking partner than Warren Adcock, who along with partner Josh Cohen has driven the vision and will steer the innovation of this magnificent space, bringing premium and discoverable talent to our state-of-the-art theater. And with Mastercard as our powerful partner, helping us create even more unforgettable experiences, we truly believe that NYC will be more exciting, more glamorous, and more delicious with the addition of Midnight Theatre to its landscape.”

The concept came from  Creative Director Warren Adcock to be a unique home setting for talent in all genres of music, magic, theater and performance art. Mastercard holders will have special opportunities to unlock exclusive experiences.

To celebrate the exciting opening,  Holly James (Moulin Rouge, Hamilton, American Psycho, Porgy and Bess), Olutayo Bosede (Moulin Rouge, The Wiz LIVE, West Side Story), Ericka Hunter (Moulin Rouge, Miss Saigon, American Psycho, Rock of Ages), and Jin Ha (Hamilton, M. Butterfly) put on a beautiful array of songs, directed by Keiji Ishiguri (Rent, 54 Sings Series).

It was an exciting night full of laughs and stories alongside the music, as the four immensely talented performers have all known each other for years, hence the title of the show. The stars shined in performances of Hamilton’s Burn and many other mashups.
