“Jay Kelly” — It’s a Hell of a Responsibility to Be Yourself [NYFF Review]

by Julia Mazza September 29, 2025
written by Julia Mazza

Biting cynicism is a hallmark of a Noah Baumbach movie. In the case of Jay Kelly, Baumbach tackles the cynicism of the film industry, or, more specifically, he puts a harsh spotlight on the nature of an A-List acting career that voraciously demands decades of one’s life and self.

So what’s missing from Jay Kelly that is keeping the titular character’s pain from resonating with the audience? Over the course of the film, Baumbach stumbles to make this story bite at the heart, and instead, perhaps with unintentional irony, delivers a hollow portrait of a hollow man.

The film opens with a quote from Sylvia Plath to hold to your chest during the film’s runtime: “It’s a hell of a responsibility to be yourself. It’s much easier to be somebody else or nobody at all.” On one level, it sets the stage for Jay Kelly’s Sartre-esque struggle — the existential fight to define himself beyond the roles he’s played. But the weight of his inner life is never fully realized; sympathizing with him remains a big ask.

After all, it’s hard to admit that you relate to an empty shell of a man. What could have made the character “whole,” according to the story, is being a good father, a steadfast friend, a devoted son. And, more importantly, being true to himself. It’s just that that might have been Baumbach’s point.

Our first introduction to the character of Jay Kelly occurs as he is filming one of the most dramatic moments of his in-production film. His time on the set wraps as the director calls “cut” off-screen, and, after being swarmed by everyone on set who has a need or ask from him, he finally makes it to the back room of his trailer. He’s exasperated about this man, but his expression is blank; a headshot of Paul Newman hangs on the wall next to his face.

Decades of being compared to the greats can cause a man who beat the odds and propelled to stardom to lose himself. Are Baumbach and Clooney showing us a man living in a time that isn’t his own? Perhaps — we are, after all, allowed a peek into an intimate moment where Jay Kelly compares to himself to Cary Grant and Gary Cooper as he gazes in the mirror. Even the blowup poster of his headshot at a grand tribute in Italy reminds the audience of an Old Hollywood actor’s headshot. Very fitting for someone who felt he is living someone else’s life, informed by flattering sentiments such as “you’re the last of the old movie stars.”

It takes a physical altercation to jolt Jay out of sleepwalking through life, triggering his existential crisis. As we come to learn through flashbacks, times when he turned his back on those he loved are his biggest regrets; piggybacking off of friend’s audition (which ultimately leads to his breakout role) and refusing to participate in a therapy session with his eldest daughter (which leads to their estrangement.) Each memory he revisits in the room where it happened, confronting his remorse head-on, yet even these moments of reflection fail to fully land emotionally.

Perhaps the heartstrings are yanked a bit tighter watching scenes featuring Jay’s agent, Rob — performances that could potentially earn Adam Sandler an Oscar nomination who grapples with whether or not Jay is “family,” embodying loyalty and the pain of overcommitment. Liz, Jay Kelly’s publicist (Laura Dern), by contrast, represents reality — a mirror reflecting the human cost of Jay’s neglect, trying to see Rob see the reality of his role in Jay’s life clearly. Baumbach opens the door, if they catch on, for the audience to hope that Rob can still stop himself from making the same mistakes Jay has made throughout his life and career.

Even with these strong supporting performances, the story’s heart is often muted. Baumbach asks the audience to feel the weight of Jay’s regrets — the missed opportunities, the estrangements, the “what-ifs” — but the film never fully allows us to inhabit his interior life. The melancholy hovers, heavy and consistent, but never piercing.

Then comes the final line: “Can we go again? I’d like another one.” Jay’s plea is both literal and metaphorical — a desperate request for a redo, a second chance at life. It crystallizes the film’s tension: the yearning to reclaim what was lost, shadowed by the reality that some things can never be undone. Yet even in this moment of clarity, the emotional impact is muted; the audience remains just outside Jay’s hollow heart, watching his heartbreak without truly absorbing it. In the end, Jay Kelly teases a catharsis that never quite comes.

Jay Kelly will be releasing in select theaters on November 14, 2025, before releasing on Netflix on December 5.

NYFF Review: ‘The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)’

by Stephen Jones October 15, 2017
written by Stephen Jones

When I told a friend of mine I was reviewing The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) she naturally asked me what it was about. I took a minute to think about it, and finally, I said, “It’s about three semi-estranged siblings and their relationship with their overbearing artist father. Sort of.” Once I registered the blank look in her eyes, I added, “You know, it sounds boring when you put it like that, but it’s really good!”

Indeed, you could give a hundred filmmakers a hundred typewriters and ask them to each write a movie from that premise and only about ten of them would churn out something good. But only Noah Baumbach would give you a script like The Meyerowitz Stories.

The setup: The three Meyerowitz children have, for more or less their own reasons, congregated in the home of their father, Harold (Dustin Hoffman). Danny Meyerowitz (Adam Sandler), unemployed but a talented pianist, has just separated from his wife. They haven’t gotten along for years but stayed together until their daughter, Eliza (Grace Van Patten), has gone away to college. Now that the separation is official, Danny is planning on staying with his dad for a bit. Matthew (Ben Stiller) is a big shot money manager come home to assist with Harold’s plan to sell the house and all the art in it. Jean (Elizabeth Marvel) is… well, she’s basically won the award for Black Sheep-iest. As mentioned earlier, the main dramatic thrust of the film is the three children dealing with their father, whom they can never seem to please. (Yes, that’s a reductive way to boil it down, but discovering the complexities of the relationships is the joy of the film.)

Baumbach has a special gift when it comes to depicting life in a way that is entertaining without losing the emotional truths that lie at the core of a moment. He is at once able to distill moments down to their emotional essence and intensify them. In The Meyerowitz Stories especially, he works in a sort of heightened realism. By that I mean scenes are bound within the constraints of the style but have just a little more umpf. This subtle magnification makes the virtues and flaws of the characters more prominent, which then makes viewers (or me at least; I can’t speak for you, I suppose) more able to make an emotional connection to the film. Every character is a sort of Everyman. Let me rephrase: the relationships in the film are Everyman-type relationships. While the specific life circumstances of these characters might not be my or your specific life circumstances (I don’t have an overbearing, pretentious, semi-successful sculptor for a father), I’m sure a lot of you know the feeling of never being able to do anything right, or never being able to please and live up to expectations.

Everything in The Meyerowitz Stories just seems right. The film achieves a special sense of verisimilitude that comes from a rare combination of writer, director, creative team, and cast that is working in perfect harmony.

Which is good, because a script is only as good as the cast that plays it. Luckily, everyone here is on their A-game. While every cast member is deserving of praise, I’d like to give a special shoutout to Adam Sandler and Ben Stiller. It’s been in vogue for a while now to cast comedians or comic actors in dramatic roles. Of course, both men have both been put in this territory before, but neither has done it as well as here. If there’s any justice in this world, they’ll be remembered for this film instead of things like Happy Gilmore (which I don’t like very much; call me an elitist if you will) and Tropic Thunder (which I do, in fact, like quite a bit).

The basic plot of The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) could, in the hands of a lesser writer/director, have been a trite rehash of themes of the hardships of family et cetera et cetera. I mean, it’s well-trodden territory, but what isn’t? Instead, Noah Baumbach has once again given us an intelligent, incisive, insightful, and fresh examination of emotional baggage we all carry.

And so, to put a final button on the review, I’ll give you my recommendation: Watch the movie. It’s streaming on Netflix now.

The film premiered at the 2017 New York Film Festival.
