This fall, other than sipping pumpkin spice lattes and apple picking, you might want to tune into OWN. The network has several unscripted shows premiering just before cuffing season begins and we find ourselves all cuddled up on the couch.
There’s TV, and then there’s what I like to call TV, TV (emphasis on the second “TV”).

NBC’s new dance competition series “World of Dance” is led by a judging team of extraordinary dance superstars — Jennifer Lopez (who also serves as an executive producer), Derek Hough, NE-YO and host/mentor Jenna Dewan Tatum.
The 10-episode series from Universal Television Alternative Studio and Nuyorican Productions will give dancers the platform to showcase their talents and the opportunity to receive a life-altering grand prize of $1 million.
In partnership with preeminent global dance brand World of Dance, the series brings the world’s elite dancers together to compete in epic battles of artistry, precision and athleticism. Solo dancers will compete against duos and crews in an unlimited range of dance, including hip-hop, popping, locking, tap, ballet, break dancing, ballroom, stomping and more.
Handpicked from qualifying events around the nation and thousands of online submissions, competitors are divided into three divisions: Junior (any size act, 17 years old and under), Upper (groups of 1- 4, 18 and older) and Team (groups of 5+, 18 and older). Our panel of experts score the acts using a precise point system developed by World of Dance, using the following criteria: Performance, Technique, Choreography, Creativity and Presentation. The competition consists of five rounds: Qualifiers, Duels, The Cut, Divisional Final and the World Final. In the first four rounds, dancers only compete within their division, but in the World Final – the winner from each division will compete against each other for the grand prize.
World of Dance is among the most trusted and fastest growing dance and music entertainment brands, combining a successful digital platform of more than 8 million subscribers with the world’s largest international urban dance competition. What began in 2008 as a single event is now a continent-spanning, tour de force of human spirit and sick dance moves. The World of Dance Tour attracts YouTube stars, industry icons and tens of thousands of fans to events in more than 25 countries, spanning the U.S., Europe, South America, and Asia. The inspiring performance videos captured from these events drive 30 million monthly views online, making World of Dance the largest dance entertainment channel on YouTube. No language barriers. No animosity. Just pure, awe-inspiring movement.
Jennifer Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas & Benny Medina will executive produce for Nuyorican Productions. Also executive producing are Kris Curry, Matilda Zoltowski, Alex Katz, David Gonzalez, Matthew Everitt and Al Hassas. The series will be produced by Universal Television Alternative Studio in association with Nuyorican Productions and World of Dance.
With the warm weather issuing in summer binge watching and season reruns, the NBCUniversal Upfront red carpet showed us what we have to expect for the fall. With appearances from Jennifer Lopez and Ne-Yo for World of Dance to Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman for The Handmade Project, NBC made sure everyone knew of its new and continuing projects for next season.
We had the chance to speak with several showrunners on their shows and what viewers can expect to see. We spoke with Glenn Howerton and Patton Oswalt for their new, Seth Meyers/Mike O’Brien written show, A.P. Bio, a show that follows Howerton as a former college philosophy professor teaching A.P. Biology to high school students. Check out the informative banter the two offered us.
What can viewers expect for the new show?
GH: Two comedy legends going head to head on NBC.
PO: There could only be one. Wait a minute, that sounds weird.
PO: Yea, only one of us is going to survive the pilot.
GH: It’s like Highlander, only it’s funnier than Highlander, I hope.
PO: We kill each other with jokes. Then we cut the other’s head off and we absorb his comedy skills.
GH: That’s right.
PO: The quickening happens. And then the Queen song plays.
GH: And that’s basically what the show’s about.
PO: You can expect a lot of very funny awkwardness on this guy’s part. Yes, but this is on a different level then It’s Always Sunny, you’ll see.
Kristen Bell stopped for us as well on the carpet, telling us there’s plenty on Ted Danson’s side of their show, The Good Place, that we can expect for season two. She said the show will have, “More weird stuff. Season two takes on an entirely different meaning because of the reveal at the end of season one, and it’s a lot more from Ted Danson’s character’s perspective this season, so it’s a little bit nastier. And it’s a lot of fun.”
Among The Handmade Project, A.P. Bio, and World of Dance, other new shows coming to NBC next season include Tina Fey’s highly talked about project, Good News, as well as The Brave, and a revival of Will & Grace.
The R&B star is set to judge the new show alongside other dance superstars.
