If You Build It, They Will Come: How the Rebelle Rally is Showing the World What EVs Can Do in the Wilderness

The Rebelle Rally is using green hydrogen to charge electric vehicles throughout the rally’s eight days in the wilderness

Women drivers are making their own roads in the eighth annual Rebelle Rally, where rocky uphills, sandy dunes, and chilly nights are no match for these tough ladies and their navigational skills. Now, the longest rally raid in the country is proving even electric vehicles are unrivaled by rough terrain– and the lack of power outlets.

Nearly 130 women at the helm of 64 cars made their way through eight days of rugged terrain in the open expanse of the Eastern Sierras last week. Put into [mostly] bone stock vehicles– cars any consumer can walk out of a dealership with– these two women driver-navigator teams showcased their abilities to think quickly and navigate distinct but rather inconspicuous surroundings while looking for specific markers, all without the use of cell phones, GPS, or other technology.

As if that wasn’t challenging enough, five teams completed Rebelle in electric vehicles: four Rivians (an R1T pickup even finished first in the rally’s 4×4 class) and the not-yet-released Ford Mustang Mach-E.

For off-road racing legend and Rebelle Rally founder and director Emily Miller, figuring out how to charge the vehicles seemingly in the middle of nowhere without any electrical outputs was just another test she had to overcome.

“I assumed it was gonna be easier than we thought. But see, once I start something, I don’t like to quit,” said Miller at the Browns Owens River Campground on the eve of the rally’s start. “And it was not easy, but it was worth doing because it’s the difference between us being in business.”

That isn’t to say creating the Rebelle Rally, let alone ensuring it continues to run as smoothly as it does year after year, isn’t a challenge in itself. Miller has to coordinate between federal, state, and municipal governments, secure permits, and ensure last-minute weather changes won’t undo months of hard work by Miller and her team. This year, Miller had to personally go through portions of the course that were decimated when Hurricane Hilary made landfall in California in August– and she said that will only be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to dealing with climate change.

Miller, who has seen the podium at many renowned races and has instructed over 8,000 people how to navigate and drive off-road, isn’t sounding the alarm bell for no reason. Cars and trucks emit over a fifth of all greenhouse gases emitted in the United States, the second-worst greenhouse gas emitter globally (we’ve only just recently lost first place to China). That means vehicle usage in the United States alone accounts for one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions in the world. With about 1.5 billion tons of greenhouse gases emitted by highway vehicles per year, and with the effects of climate change becoming all the more apparent in our daily lives, ameliorating even just a small portion of emissions can go a long way in helping mitigate any future effects on our environment. 

“People tell me that they want their kids to do this. If they want their kids to do it someday soon, I was gonna have to figure it out,” Miller said more bluntly. “And it’s not easy and nobody is doing a long-distance rally like this.”

Rebelle has been working with Salt Lake City-based energy company Renewable Innovations for several years now. Still, Miller explained with five electric vehicles in the rally this year (the largest electric field they’ve had thus far), the team had to come up with more innovative solutions.

“Most people don’t realize how much it takes to create rapid power. It’s one thing to trickle charge, but rapid power takes a tremendous amount of power and many don’t do it well.”

To facilitate this, Miller and the team behind Rebelle took to securing green hydrogen, a promising and environmentally friendly form of hydrogen that is produced through a process called electrolysis, which involves splitting water into its constituent elements, Hydrogen (H2) and Oxygen (O2). 

Let’s take a quick science breather here: 

Through water electrolysis, electricity generated from renewable sources, such as wind, solar, or hydropower, is used to split water (H2O) into hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2). This process is done using an electrolyzer, with hydrogen at one end (a cathode, the negative electrode) and oxygen at the other (an anode, the positive electrode). The hydrogen and oxygen gases are then separated in the electrolyzer, with the hydrogen gas collected and then stored for use as energy. In this case, hydrogen is used in fuel cell batteries by combining with oxygen from the air to generate electricity that then powers an electric motor. No greenhouse gas emissions are created through this process, making green hydrogen, well, truly green. In fact, the only byproduct is water. 

Whew, now we’re back. 

You might be asking yourself, ‘Hey, this is great, why don’t we have this everywhere?’ Miller: “So we’ve had issues getting access to hydrogen. A lot of people think hydrogen is easy to get. Well, turns out it’s not.”

Miller and her team spent countless hours calling presidents of companies and asking anyone from those at small start-ups to higher-ups at Boeing how to obtain enough green hydrogen to power five electric vehicles throughout the Rebelle Rally’s eight days. The calls that were returned mentioned either obscene financial numbers, less than-promised quantities of hydrogen, inferior storage vessels, or all of the above. 

Cold calling was only one step of the equation: Miller and Rebelle organizers had to hit the books, creating graphs of multiple factors like the power demands of each EV, ambient temperature, and elevation. “It’s every type of temperature, it’s every type of terrain, every altitude. We will go from 10 feet above sea level to 10,000 feet.” 

“We start looking at the numbers of the Rally: the terrain, temperature, the hill, the climbing, the descending, and I literally have to put that out on a graph, and then figure out where to put the remote rapid power so that we can figure out exactly how much power we’re really going to need for the whole base camp,” Miller explained. “And Renewable Innovations has been able to help us map that out and [we’ve gotten] to know these electric vehicles and what they take.”

“We have 800 kilograms of green hydrogen. It’s a lot of hydrogen, but it’s what it takes just to power these electric vehicles remotely and rapidly and to power the base camp as our backup to get down the road,” said Miller, who explained an event organizer had to drive to Georgia to retrieve the hydrogen, stored in type IV hydrogen vessels made from polymeric liner, the lightest commercially-available hydrogen storage solution yet.

“For the whole, that’ll last the entire rally,” Miller exclaimed cautiously. “But I have to tell you that hydrogen trucks really aren’t quite ready. We’ve been working with all the different companies. But it’s getting there. So over the next few years, more green hydrogen plants are coming online in the country. And that’s going to be great because how do you create tons and tons of power? So it’s pretty interesting.”

Miller wasn’t the only person raving over the use of green hydrogen to power EVs. Ford Motor Company engineers Hether Lee Fedullo and Peter Schultz were both in attendance during the Rebelle Rally’s prologue to check out the never-before-seen Ford Mustang Mach-E Rally ahead of its 2024 consumer debut. 

“It’s really exciting to see it in this kind of environment. I’ve worked on the Mach-E since it was a concept, so I’ve seen this whole journey of the product,” said Fedullo, who is a Vehicle Dynamics Supervisor on not only the Mach-E but the Ford Escape, Kuga, Corsair, and other programs. “Now seeing it in an early environment is really exciting. New space, just opening it up to more customers to see what the vehicle can do and see how you can have fun with it.”

“It’s built for the dirt. We’re really excited to be here at the Rebelle Rally and show the world what this car can do,” said Schultz, who works in EV Program Management on the Mach-E Rally team. “We’re taking it off the street and onto the unbeaten path.”

Fedullo and Schultz were speaking with Mach-E driver Bailey Campbell and her navigating counterpart, Kaleigh Miller, upon their return from the Rebelle Rally prologue, a pretrial dry run of what teams can expect for the rest of the rally. Water is the only byproduct when using green hydrogen to create energy through the process of water electrolysis

The engineers were looking for “anything that they’re willing to share, to be honest, because we’re not out there, they are,” said Fedullo. “It’s actually just better to hear what they have to say. They have a lot of experience in these kinds of environments and I’m wanting to hear what their thoughts are on this vehicle versus other things that they’ve driven so that we can always look for ways to improve, get better, and be more competitive.”

Both engineers touched upon the lack of EV charging infrastructure in the United States. There are currently only about 150,000 EV chargers in the country, serving more than 2.1 million EVs on the roads today. Only a quarter of those publicly available chargers are Level 3 fast chargers. Experts believe the country will need to install more than a million Level 3 chargers by 2030 to catch up with demand. However, both engineers were also cautiously optimistic about the country’s direction as EVs become more mainstream. 

“That’s where all the innovation’s happening. Electrification is the future,” Schultz said. “Progress is a process and Ford is doing a lot with their BlueOval Charge Network, and as time goes on and as the technology continues to evolve, we’ll get more range, batteries will start getting cheaper and we’ll just continue to develop all this technology.”

For Fedullo, it’s personal. The engineer has been driving a Mach-E for the last few years, and she said life’s gotten easier.

“I’ve just noticed over the last couple of years how much easier it is, with my comfort level to just the infrastructure. At least in the Michigan area, where I drive, it is a lot better. I feel like year after year we’re making great strides. So I just hope that customers will be open-minded to driving this technology and checking it out,” Fedullo said. “There’s just a lot of really cool things about EVs and the way you interact with them, from the power and performance to the quietness and some extent, the refinement of them compared to some of the equivalent in price gas vehicles. It’s really exciting.”

Fedullo concluded that the Mach-E and electric vehicles in general were best suited for the rally and this environment. 

“From a rally standpoint, I think for me, it’s really exciting to be in these natural spaces and know that you’re leaving a small eco-footprint. I know there’s charging and infrastructure and things that need to happen for this car to be here,” she said. “But it is operating relatively cleanly when it’s out here.”

“It’s very quiet. It’s not scaring animals away and making all kinds of really loud noises,” Fedullo ended. “But it is really like a serene feeling, the outdoor nature and driving as fast as you can drive this car and hearing the woods, knowing that you are making a very small footprint where you are.”

Ford Keeps Car Culture Alive By Throwing You in a Manual Mustang

Without much preamble, it’s safe to say that this year’s muscle car talk has definitely been centered around Ford. With its show-stopping all new Mustang Dark Horse, and with other manufacturers shifting to EVs, Ford has remained the safe haven for enthusiasts. They have decided to double down on their market share, and have introduced a slew of events and programs to keep fans interested and coming back for more. The latest? A Save the Manual event, in which participants have the opportunity to try the new Dark horse, and learn how to drive stick. This was an opportunity I definitely could not miss.

I arrived at the location, set up in the parking lot of CitiField. I had the opportunity to try my hand at driving manual in the Ford Bronco as well, and since the Mustang was occupied (and definitely more difficult), I decided to try the Bronco first.

I had never driven a manual vehicle before this event, and had only had experience using paddle shifters in my own vehicle. Assuming that this would give me a bit of a head start, I soon realized I was very wrong. With a Ford instructor in the passenger seat, I quickly stalled the vehicle in less than thirty seconds. “You want to slowwwly peel your foot off the clutch, and right in the sweet spot you want to start pressing down on the gas,” the instructor explained to me. I slowly released my left foot off of the clutch, and as I pressed down on the gas pedal, the car lurched forward and came to a grinding halt as the engine stalled out. My instructor laughed as I sheepishly turned the car back on and tried again. After several more tries (and several more failures), I began getting the hang of it.

Pretty soon, it was time to start shifting into gears beyond the first. My instructor explained that it was the same process, except that I had to watch my RPM and ensure that I was in the sweet spot, around 3000 RPMS for the Bronco, before I shifted. This number would vary for each gear however, and since the location for the shifter to go for each gear was different as well, it was starting to become a lot to remember. Pretty soon, I slipped up and let go of the clutch too early, and the vehicle jerked to a stop and stalled once more, right when I thought I was getting the hang of it. Driving stick was a lot harder than I thought it would be! It was definitely more fulfilling , however. I could sense the lurches in the cars engine, and the sound tones that would signal to me when it was time to shift and when I couldn’t. I felt much more closely connected to the car.

After getting the hang of the Bronco, it was time for me to move on to the Dark Horse, which I was extremely excited about. Accompanying me in the vehicle was NASCAR driver Ryan Blaney, who had been driving stick shift his entire life. It truly was a dream come true.

As I started the vehicle, I was prepared for the worse. If the Bronco had been difficult, this awesome V8 would definitely throw me for a loop.

However, I was pleasantly surprised that driving the Mustang came easier than the Bronco. The random stalls and mistakes that came with the Bronco never came with the Mustang, and I grew more and more comfortable driving it as I shifted to higher gears. It was definitely a more forgiving car. Since Ryan did not have to do much instructing, we had much more time to talk, and we conversed about driving, cars, his NASCAR career, and even other topics like movies. It was a wonderful experience.

I truly admire the effort that Ford is putting into keeping the car enthusiast culture alive. Driving manual is definitely not a necessary skill; after all, driving automatic is easier and more applicable to the masses. However, for enthusiasts, it provides a deeper and richer experience with their vehicles, and allows for more refined control of their machine. This is something that is definitely valuable, and with the advent of EVs, it seems like it is a dying skill. With no one left that is interested in the hobby, car manufacturers will neglect to make a manual variant of their cars, and the sense of connection with one’s car will be lost.

This is why it is important to keep passing down our skills, teaching as many as we can, and learn all that we can, so that this wonderful ability can stay alive. I truly thank Ford for their commitment to providing individuals with the outlet to hone this skill, and I am confident that as long as manufacturers keep giving programs and events that allow for knowledge transfer, as Ford has done, and do not simply kill off their manual variants in the name of cutting costs, driving stick will be enjoyed by many for decades to come.

A Ride-along in Ford’s new 2024 Mustang Proves There’s Nothing Else Quite Like It

Certain things about America are generally true: the Bald Eagle is the free-est bird, the only thing better than fried food is super-sized fried food, and that that nothing beats the crackles and pops of good ol’ American auto engineering. I was able to experience it first hand last week, when I received an exclusive ride-along in the soon-to-launch 2024 Mustang Dark Horse, Ford’s new high-end track-focused machine. Behind the wheel was the new Chief Engineer at Mustang, Laurie Transou, who, for a Minnesota woman, navigated the busy intersections of Midtown Manhattan with relative ease. As we weaved through traffic, several pedestrians on the crosswalk and in vehicles alike could not help but gawk at the eye-catching new Mustang.

Killer Pony

The Dark Horse’s exterior design language was bound to turn a few heads, as compared to the 6th gen Mustang, this new 7th gen is more modern, more menacing, and more aerodynamic than its predecessor. Every body line is a sharp edge, with a front bumper and grille that culminates in massive air intakes and a sharp splitter.

The headlights project with stylistic triple LEDs, and the central grille dons the classic Mustang insignia. If looks could kill, this car could be charged with manslaughter. The rear end also received an update, with more polygonal taillights that still maintain the classic three vertical LEDs that Mustangs have been known for since their inception, and the sequential turn-signal programming that they have implemented since 2010. Atop the rear decklid rests a massive gloss-black spoiler that generates downforce that one can only imagine, and down below, a rumbling chromed quad-tip exhaust, the gigantic wheels smooth and matte black, enclosed within them a bright blue 6-piston Brembo brake caliper system.

In all, the exterior invokes classic design cues from older generations, while simultaneously ushering in engineering that appeals to the modern eye. Through all the changes, it is clear that Ford has not forgotten what made the original Mustangs great; along the rear window, those with a keen eye can find tiny painted silhouettes of every previous generation of Mustang, arranged in a row, as a dedication to the ancestors of the Dark Horse, watching over it.

 

Refined Defined

The interior is no slouch, either. The standout feature is an all-new curved panel screen that starts behind the wheel and extends all the way to the middle infotainment center. This means that the driver’s gauges, vehicle info, and track-focused features, as well as the entertainment, climate control, and CarPlay/Android Auto integration, all reside on a singular piece of beautiful glass, all digitized and all glorious.

The digitalization of many aspects of the standard car experience also bring with it an unprecedented level of customization—take for instance, the ability to choose the gauge style among several, spanning from simple to stylistic, to one even reminiscent of that from Ford’s own ’79-’93 Fox Body Mustang. The rest of the interior also received an upgrade, with flat metallic black panels and pieces akin to the cockpit of a fighter jet, and blue piping and stitching on the seats. An item of notice: a surprisingly beefy electronic E-brake formulated specifically, in both ergonomics and mechanics, for drifting. Well, that’s one thing I won’t have to worry about adding myself.

 

The Horse and the Rider

I entered the vehicle with Laurie Transou, and I could immediately tell how this wasn’t just another corporate gig for her— she lives and breathes Mustang. She could barely contain her excitement as she explained the various new features and advancements made in this latest model, to the point where my questions were answered even before I asked them. I knew immediately that Ford had done right in appointing her the new Chief Engineer.

As we peeled out onto the road, she shifted through the 6-speed manual transmission with ease, and explained how she had been driving stick since she was 16. “I’m currently in the process of teaching my daughters how to drive manual as well,” she explained. “It’s more important now than ever, driving manual is a dying art.”
As we came upon a stretch of empty road, she leaned forward and slammed her foot onto the pedal, aggressively shifting up to second, third gear. My whole body was pressed back into my seat, and I received a feeling of pure euphoria that I had not for a while. While giddy with delight, Laurie took the time to explain the engine that was delivering such a wonderful experience. The churning and humming machine is Ford’s own naturally aspirated 5.0L Coyote V8, capable of outputting 500 crank horsepower, which is a whole 20 ponies more than the previously most-powerful Mustang, last year’s Mach-1. This is in part due to the all-new dual throttle bodies fed by dual air intakes that takes the engine beyond. The suspension also ensures a slick and comfortable ride, with MagneRide adaptive dampers that bring comfort without sacrificing the gritty roadfeel. In all, nearly everything in the Dark Horse is an improvement or refinement of the previous iteration, and it is immediately apparent.

 

Closing Thoughts

Getting a ride in the new Mustang was instantly a joy, both because of the vehicle itself, and the great passion and charisma Laurie exhibited when showing it off. It was an exhilarating and informative presentation, and in the ~15 minutes I got within the car, I feel like I experienced everything it had to offer, shy of driving it. Laurie explained how there will be an event to teach how to drive in manual, using the Dark Horse, in July, so hopefully that chance will come soon for me. In the meantime, in an age where auto manufacturers are more and more turning towards EVs, I know the Mustang brand is definitely in safe hands, and that car aficionados everywhere will relish the new Mustang Dark Horse, and whatever Ford has in store for the future.

The 2024 Mustang Dark Horse is ready to reserve for purchase right now, will be available to drive this Summer 2023.
