This year will mark 40 years since the Ghostbusters banded together in Dan Aykroyd’s iconic film, and in the latest installment in the iconic series, the gang is getting back together. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire features everything that an OG fan will love, including the iconic firehouse, which the Spenglers return to in order to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who’ve developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level. With the film taking place in such an iconic city, it only made sense for Manhattan to play home to the premiere as well.

This year proved to have a new addition to the Athena Film Festival, in which the first ever Leading Man Award was given to Paul Feig for his dedication in promoting female protagonists and showing women on screen when others in Hollywood avoided it. Ghostbusters star Kate McKinnon came out to support Feig and presented the award to him as the two reminisced on the struggles they had in making Ghostbusters as well as just showing funny women on camera. Here are some of the key points Feig made in his interviews:
You received a lot of backlash on Twitter and the internet ever since rumors of Ghostbusters came out. How was it like fighting with trolls who were against the film?
Well fighting on the internet is very interesting because it’s such a weird fight because you’re fighting with faceless people who are hiding behind their computers. Look, there are plenty of fans of Ghostbusters who have an issue that it’s a reboot, and that I completely get, I find that valid. But when it’s just pure misogyny, I don’t want to give voice to it. When I’m on the internet, I try not to block people, I want to hear all voices but sometimes you just hammered on for a year and you finally crack and I just decided that I just wanted to start blocking people because I don’t want to give those people a voice in a forum and it’s just such a non-starter when it’s just misogyny then what’s the point?
You can listen to their speeches the rest of the interviews with Feig below:
I mean, if we already have a Ghostbusters reboot with a whole female cast, why not have Sandra Bullock run her own casino heist?
Now we all loved the original. And I mean the original, with the Rat Pack of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. (in racist undertones) all robbing a casino. And of course, we liked the remake that George Clooney starred in and made with Brad Pitt and Matt Damon.
So obviously it’s time for the female rat pack to emerge. The film, which Clooney will produce, will have Gary Ross of The Hunger Games directing. Over a year in the works, the project is finally getting made, all with Olivia Milch (known for Queen & Country) as the screenwriter, all when Clooney, Steven Soderbergh and Jerry Weintraub came together last fall. And while they had a mild set back with Weintraub’s death earlier this summer, the film is still going on full speed ahead.
The all new female cast film is set to be released in 2017, and this still leaves up for question as to how close the script will be towards the 2001 Clooney film, or what ten other women will star in the film.
