Specialty European Gourmet Market and Sandwich Bar HauteMess Opens In The Fairfax District

The world needs more markets. There are big box stores, there are liquor stores and bodegas, but there aren’t enough sort of high concept shops where you can pick up quality products for good prices in inviting surroundings.

Well guess what? HauteMess has you covered. The European goods market boasts a sandwich bar, curated charcuterie, cheeses, European coffees, pastries and 150 wines.

All their breads and pastries are made in house, and the owners run the Uber-popular Della Terra restaurant next door. Needless to say, they’re very busy thanks to this new three-years-in-the-making endeavor.

I tried the Old Fashion Salumi -all the sandwiches are named after drinks -which is made with Spicy Capocello, mortadella, soppressata, Genoa salami, provolone, fresh tomato, lettuce and Dijon mustard. You can taste the freshness, like the ingredients are aerating in your mouth.

It was filling, but tasted light and nutritious, a salty and serene lunch that won’t weigh you down. And the bread. Mama Mia.

This is the only sandwich made with ciabatta bread, and we all know ciabatta is ruler of breads. Here it was satisfying as all get, firm and perfectly baked.

I paired it with a delicious coffee, one with sweet and bitter notes that lifted me the more I drank.

The peanut butter pastry I took down was elegant and even, revealing new flavors with each bite. It’s bursting with mousse and held up well against my aggressive forking.

This place is designed with real heart. The owners personally planned everything, and added human touches like plates used as wall decor, each brought back from Italy.

HauteMess feels like home, and it’s sleek and satisfying designing is anything but messy.

Hours of operation are 7 am to 9 pm daily.
