On February 3, Skittles Commercial: The Broadway Musical hit The Town Hall stage for a one-time performance in the middle of Super Bowl Sunday.
Broadway fans and supporters rushed to buying tickets when they heard the news about Michael C. Hall starring as the lead in Skittles Commercial: The Broadway Musical. The ticket proceeds went to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
The one-time-only performance maintained its level of mystique even after the curtain closed, leaving audience members confused by the intent of the live Broadway rendition of a Super Bowl commercial.
The fans at least left reconciling that we live in an inescapable world of advertisement, and Skittles, though stepping out the ordinary, was still intent on its sales and exposure by creating a 30-minute production which advertised advertising. However, that was the magic in the show, and the audience loved it as they were sure to leave with branded novelties: vinyl records, T-shirts, bags of skittles, and whatever miscellaneous products purchased on stage before the show began! The onstage concession was set up like a bodega and later used in the show!
Probably the most humorous part was the announcement of only 600 packs of Skittles sold during the live show, indicating the company mantra that advertisement ruins everything! The crowd also liked the scripted and seemingly unrelated interjections from the audience, who were later discovered as actual cast members in the show.
The catchy soundtrack was also another favorite. The original tracks—also available on Spotify—included This Might Have Been A Bad Idea, Advertising Ruins Everything, and This Definitely Was A Bad Idea.
