A game that is not a game…but still a game
Last Wednesday, late night host Samantha Bee unveiled her latest app called “This Is Not A Game: The Game.” Samantha Bee has been known for telling the cold hard truth and pushing the envelope when it comes to the world we live in, especially the United States political system. And now Bee is taking that passion and bringing it to the general public in the form of a game. “This Is Not A Game: The Game” centers around an HQ Trivia style game in which players have the chance to win money by answering 10 questions correctly about the news, politics, and any other current events items out there. This app comes from one of her field pieces where she learned about what it takes to incentivize people into participating and learning about the world that they live in. She used this idea and is channeling it in a way where she and her team can help people learn about politics, voting, and incentivize people into going out and voting (especially during the upcoming midterm elections).
The game makes players answer questions about politics and tests their knowledge about the US voting system, but all in the form of jokes where the player doesn’t feel like the game is forcing knowledge down anyone’s throat. What is even more interesting about this game is that Bee made a huge effort for it to be bipartisan that way it does not alienate any single players based on their political beliefs. Bee clearly stated that this game is just an effort to help people become more aware of the political situation around them and help them get more involved. And one fun way that this game differs from HQ Trivia is that even if you get a question wrong, you can still answer questions and participate in the game, even if you don’t get the money at the end.
One other fun thing is that you can use lives to enter back into the game and win money even if you answered a question incorrectly. Bee is using this idea of lives to also help get people out and vote by creating challenges to win more lives. One of the challenges that her team describes is looking at if you are registered to vote and if you aren’t, going out and registering. This act would apparently get players more lives. We got a chance to play this game and it was a lot of fun. A lot of the questions aren’t that hard, a good number of them being gag questions with very obvious answers. One question that stumped players though was a question asking which zodiac sign Ruth Bader Ginsburg is. The answer was Pisces which makes sense because she seems very water sign like.
