This past week, Rado hosted a luncheon and talk by Studio Edelkoort in Industry City, NYC as part of the WantedDesign event and the lead up to the Rado Star Prize for 2016.
This May, Swiss watchmaker Rado announced that it is the Watch Sponsor of WantedDesign, design showcase held in NYC. As part of this city-wide celebration of design, Rado will launch the first ever U.S. edition of the Rado Star Prize, which is held internationally to promote the work of young designers. As part of the festivities, we were invited to a luncheon at the WantedDesign grounds in Industry City. The stateside edition of the Star Prize will focus on exploring the concept of lightness and “a lighter way of living” – a theme embodied by Rado’s latest lightweight and minimalist watch collections. The event was an opportunity to learn more about Rado as well as the design community, including a talk by Studio Edelkoort, a group involved in trend forecasting; appropriate considering the design community is often responsible for keeping culture moving forward.
Ten finalists and one winner of the Star Prize U.S. 2016 will be selected by a specialist jury comprising members of NYCxDESIGN, WantedDesign, Rado, and members of the design and watch community. The winner will receive $5,000 in prize money as well as a Rado watch, and all finalists will have the opportunity to display their concepts at WantedDesign Brooklyn.
A leading design brand, Rado has a longstanding tradition of initiating and partnering with design events and promoting young talent through the Star Prize. Ever since its beginnings in Lengnau, Switzerland, Rado has had a pioneering spirit, with the brand philosophy “if we can imagine it, we can make it.” In conjunction with the ambitious and exciting WantedDesign effort, the match couldn’t have been more perfect and the theme of ‘lightness’ was satisfying in its approachability and elegance.
