Royce Da 5’9″‘s collaboration with Preemo was one of my personal highlights for 2014.
Watching Preemo step out of his hook scratching comfort zone, supplied with Adrian Younge instrumentals, was a learning experience. I don’t think I’m far off in saying that a good number of younger heads find Preemo to be predictable and old fashioned. He proved those younger fans wrong with Prhyme, showing innovation in beat and song structure.
Preemo picked the best emcee to fit the slot of instrumentation he created, by inviting Detroit lyricist Royce Da 5’9″. His flow, which is so unbelievably adaptable in its detraction from an orthodox style, filled this new style of Preemo production with absolute comfort. The project was succinct and sweet in a way, however I was left so hungry for more.
With this Prhyme aftertaste, Preemo and Royce bring in two more legendary heavy hitters in the form of Phonte and MF DOOM. That alone solidified the track’s quality, however Royce’s less than perfect singing tied everything together in a perfect bundle. Everything about this song boasts confidence. From Royce’s off key chops to MF DOOM’s regular excellence, and not to mention the spacious instrumental Preemo hands them, letting the crew exert their skills without limit.
