Oxford-based band BE GOOD has blended together indie pop and alternative R&B to create their unique sound. The band recently dropped their EP Everything’s Alright In The Evening. The Knockturnal spoke with the band about their new music, their musical style, Oxford, and what fans can expect to see next.
The Knockturnal: How did you all come up with the name BE GOOD?
BE GOOD: We’re named after 98-year-old scientist John B. Goodenough. He developed lithium-ion batteries in Oxford in the 80s and he’s got an incredible laugh. He’s been my desktop background for the last 10 years.
The Knockturnal: How would you all describe your musical style?
BE GOOD: We see our music as RnB-infused pop music but projected through a warped DIY lens. We jokingly called our musical style ‘sex pop’ when we first started the band, but now that just sounds like a poorly-titled Spotify playlist.
The Knockturnal: How has Oxford influenced your musical sound?
BE GOOD: We all grew up in satellite towns around Oxford, and that experience informs a lot of our songs – the sense of living on the peripheries of real life that living in suburbia can bring. Musically, Oxford has a pretty impressive legacy of ambitious bands with popular appeal – Radiohead, Foals, Glass Animals. There’s a load of great young bands here at the moment doing all sorts of different music and helping each other out. It’s really inspiring.
The Knockturnal: What was the inspiration for your new EP?
BE GOOD: All the songs on the EP are set in the evening. When we were writing these songs, we imagined many of the scenes were set in a nowhere town that is in perpetual twilight.
The Knockturnal: What was the inspiration for the music video Torch Song?
BE GOOD: The song and music video are partly based on a true story of when I got punched. There was a freak snowstorm in the morning as we started shooting but it was actually really fitting with the themes of the song so we just went with it. It was bloody cold but the team (all our housemates – this was during UK lockdown) did such a great job.
The Knockturnal: What can fans expect to see next from you all?
BE GOOD: Frosted tips.
