On Thursday, June 25, A24 Films, Chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group Lucian Grainge CBE along with filmmakers Asif Kapadia and James Gay-Rees hosted the United States premiere of “Amy,” which is a documentary about the life and music career of UK singer Amy Winehouse. The screening was held at ArcLight Hollywood.
Directed by Asif Kapadia and produced by James Gay-Rees, the heartfelt film shows an up close and personal side of the singer that many fans never got a chance to see. American actress and singer Rumer Willis were among those on the red carpet. When commenting on Amy she said “I thought she was such a innovator for people who loved that jazz and blues sound and I think there wasn’t anybody at that time making music like she was and I feel like she opened the doorway for people that wanted that kind of vibe.” Winehouse, known for her one of a kind voice created a genre of her own that blended Soul, R&B and Pop. Don Was thought “She was a really soulful kid. She was the real deal – a lot of heart, a lot of soul. For any of us who make music, that’s the rare bird that comes along.” Rare she was, and dying at the tender age of 27, she left the world too soon but gave us the gift of her music to cherish forever.
The after-party was held at the Roosevelt Hotel. Celebrities such as The Weeknd, Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne, Nick Jonas, and Alesso were among those in attendance. Stay tuned for our in depth review later this week.
