On March 10th, 2020 Tidal held a CRWN interview with Megan Thee Stallion at Gotham Hall.
Elliott Wilson and Jesse Kirshbaum started the CRWN interview series and Wilson has been able to interview some of the biggest hip-hop artists in the industry. In the almost hour-long conversation, Megan talked about her new album Suga, growing up in Houston and some of her aspirations.
Megan decided to release Suga since she wasn’t sure if she was going to be able to put out music because of her label situation. She named her album Suga since she’s introducing a new persona. She explained that Suga is the side of her that embraces imperfection and being herself will make her the happiest. Megan talked about being an only child and growing up around all adults and strong women. The women in her life always made her believe that she was special and that’s where she got her confidence that drives her career today.
Meg grew up on Biggie, Pimp C and Three 6 Mafia and that’s why she enjoys hearing people rap and tries to come up with clever lines throughout her songs. She spoke about taking music very seriously and the other artists’ that she works with have to be passionate about it also. That’s why she decided to work with Kehlani for “Hit My Phone” since she admires her work ethic and a lot of her music. Megan spoke about wanting to write for singers in the future since she enjoys R&B music and thinks she could do it pretty well.
She also spoke about school and career balance since she’s still in school at TSU and she wants to finish school since it’s something she started before she became an artist and also wants to finish school for her mother and grandma. Megan wants to open up some assisted living facilities in Houston when she’s finished with school and have her classmates run it, and give them an opportunity fresh out of college to get a job since it can be tough. Even though she just dropped Suga she explained that it isn’t her debut project since she’s currently working on that.
After the interview, Megan debuted the “Captain Hook” video. The video was pretty much a turned up studio session, which she felt was right for this song and she had a lot of fun making the video.
Shout out to Tidal for the invite.
