On The Scene: Phillips Auction House Hosts VivArte Colombia Arts Benefit

Timed conveniently amid the Latin American art sales week in New York, VivArte pulled some big names for its Colombian Arts charity auction this year, artists including Olga de Amaral and Edgar Negret and guests including the chair of the event, the Columbian Ambassador to the UN, and many artists, including abstract artist Fanny Sanin.

VivArte mission is to use art to bridge education and investment in the human person. The idea that a child that is stimulated, in a peaceful environment, and nourished properly will create the highest rate of return for his or her country. Its an ambitious idea but has caught the eyes and sponsorship interests of the likes of Morgan Stanley, Martini, Bombay Sapphire, and more. It goes to show that a chance to enrich and reach a fast-growing population is a united interest.

With Tom Collins’ made-to-order by Bombay Sapphire and prosecco provided by Martini as well as exotic hors d’oeuvres including steak, vegetable rolls, macaroons, and more.

As for the art, it was a wide range that was available at the silent auction taking place that evening, then more the following day at the public auction, produced by Phillips. Most, if not all, of the works were contributed by artists, with the curatorial effort coming from Colombian native Monica V, who also curated a Fanny Sanin retrospective. From photography to painting, as well as sculpture and diorama, the selection was fully contemporary and shows the position of Colombian art today: relatively cutting edge but with a homey D.I.Y.-ness that isn’t found in other Latin-American art.

The evening was presented by Bombay Sapphire where guests enjoyed the below cocktails:

SAPPHIRE AND TONIC

2 parts Bombay Sapphire Gin

Tonic

Squeeze of lime

SAPPHIRE COLLINS
2 parts Bombay Sapphire Gin
1 part fresh lemon juice
¾ part simple syrup
Club soda
Lemon wedge garnish
