Independent fashion brands have always attracted the marketplace, this year the Nolcha Shows during NYFW just closed their Fall/Winter 2018 season, housed within Mercedes Benz, Manhattan.
This was the go-to event for discovering fresh designs. The event featured a collective runway showcasing four designers, By Sonia Olla, who opened the show with a live flamenco performance drawing back to her Spanish roots. Olla explored the traditional dance and incorporated notions of her heritage in combination with a modern take on Spanish style.
The second designer to showcase was a Canadian collective, Vitruvius. The show featured structures of Venetian costumes including shoulder pads, ruffles, and elongated silhouettes.
ARANYANI, a collection of luxury hand-painted leather bags by Indian artisans for women & men. In an age where it’s vital to support local artisans and talent, this brand does it wisely.
BC.J, a Parsons graduate, designer SIJUN closed the show. She is known for using fashion to create three-dimensionality and infusing her collections with emotional narratives, the Fall/Winter 18 collection was influenced by the vivid skylines of Tokyo.
This collective of ideas were inspirational as they all had collections rooted in either heritage or artisanship. The variety of styles and colors that were showcased had the attendees intrigued and eager to see what these designers will showcase next season.
