10:00 AM Thursday marked the beginning of the Fall/Winter 17 show season, kicked off by designers Nicholas and Christopher Kunz for Nicholas K.
This season, their politically charged conceptual ideas became apparent in the program; however the fashions seemed to be lacking their inspiration. Citing iconic movements of “communal diversity and unity” such as Nelson Mandela, hip-hop, and experimentalism, the collection fell slightly short of their honor. With this in mind, the garments themselves were beautifully styled; with singular hoop earrings, and chunky nose rings to accent the looks.
A reoccurring theme in the collection was the idea of sleeves tied around the waist, implied by fabric manipulation on a variety of dresses and shirts. The silhouettes were very “cool kid”, with an off duty model feeling. Comfortable, easy, and luxurious were words that came to mind as velvet, satin, and shearling walked the runway in an extremely earthy palate, consisting of tans, beige, creme, brown, and oddly enough an interesting series of looks in burnt orange. The monochromatic color stories have been prominent in the past several seasons with the minimal designers, and for better or for worse, after this season it appears as though this styling is becoming a habit and is here to stay.
Live music by Latasha Alcindor accompanied the show, with DJ Rob Swift spinning the tracks. Latasha and Swift are active in the New York music scene, promoting their work through various forms of media.
