The stars of the hit comedy reflect on their characters’ evolution, and why being “the hottest people in the office” still matters.

The Apple TV+ hit comedy Loot is back for its third season, and things are, quite literally, taking off.

The series, led by the hilarious Maya Rudolph, returned on October 15 with a two-episode premiere, followed by weekly drops every Wednesday. And after two seasons, the series has consistently balanced luxury, chaos, and heartfelt moments while examining what it truly means to give back when you have everything.

Last season, the show managed to carve out surprisingly introspective layers within characters Rudolph’s Molly Wells, Nicholas (Joel Kim Booster), and Sofia (Michaela Jaé Rodriguez).

Molly continued to struggle with giving away her billion-dollar fortune and redefining her life as the head of the Wells Foundation rather than the ex-wife of tech billionaire John Novak, played by Adam Scott (Severance). At her side is her slick-mouthed assistant Nicholas, who’s finding out what it means to be more than just a sidekick in Molly’s orbit, and Sofia, the Executive Director of the Wells Foundation and a perfectionist who is learning to embrace imperfection in her personal life.

Season two ends with both Molly and Sofia experiencing new highs and lows in their love lives. Molly’s friends-to-lovers trope with Arthur (Nat Faxon) ends with an awkward fallout, while Sofia finally decides to stop self-sabotaging and give in to her new beau, Isaac (O-T Fagbenle).

Now, Season three opens with an unexpected arc: Molly and Nicholas find themselves on a deserted island after fleeing LA on her private jet. It’s a setup that promises more self-discovery and even more laughs.

We sat down with Joel Kim Booster and Michaela Jaé Rodriguez to dive into all things Loot, and what fans can expect this go around, from where the story takes their characters to how the Wells Foundation team continues to evolve.

For Booster, exploring the limits of loyalty will be a big theme. “I definitely think that season three continues the journey he’s been on,” he said. “He’s not just her employee, he’s also her best friend. But, you know, when does ride or die become just die?” It’s a question that perfectly sums up the tone of the show. With equal parts devotion and dysfunction, it looks like season three will test that bond in new ways.

Booster explained that Nicholas is learning to balance his dedication to Molly with his own sense of identity and ambition. “For Nicholas, it’s about continuing to find his identity outside of just being Molly’s assistant,” he shared. “They’re always going to be close, but any friendship that deep is going to go through changes. The closeness will always be there, but it’s going to look a little different.”

After spending much of season two grappling with her new budding romance with Isaac, Sofia is finally learning to let her guard down. The audience finally got a peek into new shades of Sophia, and who she really is behind her no-nonsense demeanor and crisp blazers.

Rodriguez reflected on the growth that has been building since the beginning. “There are a couple of moments this season that I’m really proud to see her take the steps to grow for herself,” she said. “But I’m excited for the audience to see how she maneuvers and navigates around that and how she actually learns from it too.”

When it comes to the dynamic between Molly’s left and right hand, Sofia and Nicholas, both actors, agreed that their characters’ chemistry is one of the most entertaining parts of the show. Despite their contrasting personalities constantly pulling her in different directions, both Sofia and Nicholas have Molly’s best interest at heart, and their love for her is what essentially ties them together.

Booster laughed as he described the duo’s very different energies. “I always describe it as Nicholas and Sophia being the angel and the devil on Molly’s shoulders,” he said. “Sophia appeals to her best instincts, and Nicholas appeals to her worst… at the end of the day, they both want what’s best for her, and they’ll put their differences aside to make that happen.”

Though both actors acknowledged that there’s clearly a mutual admiration. “There’s also a lot of game recognizes game between Nicholas and Sophia,” Booster joked. “We’re both the hottest people in the office, come on. We are allies as the hottest people in the office, for sure.” Their real-life dynamic was fun to watch firsthand. It’s easy to see why their on-screen partnership is one of the highlights of the show.

For Rodriguez, the beauty of Loot is that it never takes itself too seriously, even when it deals with genuine emotional change. “The show is about growth, but it never forgets to have fun,” she said. “It’s about finding balance, whether that’s in love, friendship, or even fashion.” Booster agreed, echoing that the heart of the show lies in its relationships. “It’s exciting to see how these relationships change, but the closeness always stays,” he said. “That’s what makes the show feel real.”

The returning cast also includes Nat Faxon, Ron Funches, and some exciting guest stars like D’Arcy Carden, Zane Phillips, Henry Winkler, and X Mayo. Alan Young, Dave Becky, Danielle Renfrew Behrens, Dean Holland, and Natasha Lyonne also return as executive producers, with Matt Hubbard serving as showrunner on season three.
