The Knockturnal had the pleasure of attending the Michael Costello show earlier this week and here’s everything you need to know.
First let’s take a moment to note some of the noteworthy attendees such as Cheer Bear from the Care Bears and Pandemonia the blow up doll. The 35th anniversary of Care Bears takes place this year and in honor of such a momentous occasion, Cheer Bear sat front row and graced Fashion Week with his presence. Other guests included rapper Cardi B and model Shuan Ross.
Costello first came to prominence as a contestant on season 8 of the popular Project Runway. Although he finished fourth, he’s gone on to have a successful career. Michael Costello has dressed some of the biggest names in the music industry from Beyonce to Lady Gaga to Jennifer Lopez.
Now on to the look. The hair was big and texturized and very reminiscent of the late 70s and early 80s disco era afros. The makeup was also very dramatic and retro with a classic bold red lip and heavy eyeshadow. The lead makeup artist was Edward Cruz sponsored by Inglot cosmetics. The overall aesthetic for the look was very Diana Ross glitz and glamour.
The models were all braless and had actual curves. It was refreshing to see models with real bodies walk the runway, albeit still amazingly in shape and relatively thin. Michael Costello designed this collection for the “enviable woman.”
The collection was mostly floor-length gowns with a few jumpsuits and one shorter length dress. The color pallet for the collection was fairly simple, yet heavily embellished and featured black, white and silver. There were a lot of sequins, lace, fur, large floral accents and waist-hugging belts. Other trends in the collection included form fitting silhouettes, plunging necklines, a lot of negative space and corsets.
